MOORINGSPORT, LA (KSLA) - Caddo Parish Sheriff's deputies have suspended their search on Caddo Lake for a missing boater who they believe drowned.

Here is what I don't get...

quote:

Authorities tell KSLA News 12 that a man, his wife and their two grandchildren were fishing in a boat on the lake. The man was setting an anchor when he lost his balance and fell overboard. Deputies say the man's wife tried to extend a paddle to the him but he lost his grip and went under. Authorities say the man was not wearing a life jacket.

You can stand up in 90% of that area(Big Green Break) as it rarely gets over 5 feet deep.

There are people who get in boats that can't swim?

Shitload of gators in there.

They must have been on the outskirts or even at the edge of the channel?

Sure. Without a life jacket though... seems risky.

I can only imagine the shock and fear is what got him. There is no current, so how could you not grab the boat or lose your grip on a paddle?

Did it give his age? He might have been real old.

I think this guy couldn't swim from what I have heard. There are documented cases of people not being able to swim drowning in really shallow water. Maybe they were fishing trees on the very edge of Big Green and the water was a little deeper?

Yeah this is the part I dont get. How did he just sink?!? People float, they don't just sink out of site like that without being weighed down. I just don't get it. It's tragic for the family but the story doesn't make sense to me.

What I'm thinking too. He got tangled in the anchor line.

Ah. Didn't think about this. That makes some sense.

Word is, the "black water" conditions of Caddo Lake is not helping the search... It's a shame the guy is black, now they have a search and rescue issue and a PC damage control issue at the sheriffs office.

If he fell out throwing an anchor in, he probably went head first. I'm not familiar with the area but seems plausible that he hit his head on something and went unconscious.

People float

I sink, but I know how to swim. Whether you sink or swim is based on body density. Overgeneralization: Fat people tend to float, lean people tend to sink. I remember a swim instructor getting really pissed with me for not floating when I was a kid. I would take a deep breath hold it and relax. She would hold me up at the surface and let go. I immediately started sinking.

Her explanation for why I sank was that I was not relaxed enough!

I guess she failed her science classes.
