Aside from the cameras everywhere, constant thoughtcrime, endless war, atrocious media, corporate technocratic oligopolies, growing police state, and a bunch of other things, we have a long way to go. No need to worry.

Right, the novel that took place in the year 1984 which was 31 years ago.

Although come to think of it, I did recently have a government agent put a bunch of rats on my face so maybe..?

Some people are very close. Some of us are a million miles out of hand.

No shite. We are easily past the point of no return. Whatever though, we have privilege and know it so we are all good! The people fighting on twitter, worldstar and tumbler are the dumbfricks who will never get jobs!

I think we're closer to living some of the themes from Aldous Huxley's "Brave New World."

It won't happen. You have to remember how intense that book actually was, and the fact that virtually every person on earth was in on it.

It's completely impossible.

I think what hit me as the closest thing to 1984 was when I had a conversation with an officer of the law the other day. We were talking about those cameras on top of red lights- not red light cameras the other ones intended to monitor traffic. They capture every license plate through that intersection- though we were sold that wasn't the intent. Law enforcement can now use that to track suspected criminal driving patterns and timing. All they need is a license plate. To me that is both great in helping fight crime but a concern of it gets used inappropriately.

Somebody in the causeway flyover thread mentioned their friend who monitored cameras for the bridge.
He said the resolution is so good, the dude can tell what kind of beer you're drinking as you go by doing 65mph.

Solution: use a coozie

In the same vein, that made me think of the movie "Gattaca" as well. Being able to choose intelligence, sex, and sexual orientation of your baby is right around the corner. Some day you'll go to a geneticist and they will do all that for you, optimizing you and your SO's DNA.. The poors on the other hand will have luck of the draw. I don't see how that won't eventually happen.

We may see a movement at some point for the government to mandate genetic engineering. They've already made the necessary arguments in other areas (it's for your own good, it might cost the health care system money, you use government roads to get to the doctor so they can tell you what to do, etc.)

The illustrations in Orwell's book were extreme compared to what we have presently. Of course we are heading down that path. It's still unclear if the citizens will allow further encroachment of their freedoms to be exploited?

You'll have to excuse him.

He probably attended public schools.
