Would you return meat to a grocery store if it expired before the "sell by" date

Bought some chicken from Kroger. Had a sell by date of April 2nd, and when I opened it just now, it reeked of death and Satan.

I was pissed. I bagged it up to return it but it seemed like no matter how many plastic bags I put around it, the smell kept seeping out. Maybe it was just in my nose. Either way, I didn't think I could stomach the ten minute drive to get a measly $5 back, so I just tossed it.

Would you return it or toss it and forget about it?

Totally should've eaten that. Grill it, put it on a sandwich with some nice spicy mustard.

Last summer at the beach I bought some chicken wings to grill during the week. After the 2nd - 3rd day in the fridge they smelled so bad it made you nauseous. Took them back to the store and they had no problem swapping them out.

I took a whole bird back once and offered to let them smell. They said, no thanks, go get a new one.

Got some wings that were so bad I had to get rid of them immediately. I told the Brookshire's manager the next time I was there, and he told me to just grab a new pack whenever I was ready for wings again.

I also had to swap out some lamb at Sam's once.

Those were the only times I've ever had an issue. All were within sell by date. None of the stores quibbled at all about making it right.

I did this at Publix before. Wife bought a picnic roast, and it smelled a little funny when she put it in the crock pot. The smell got much, much worse when it was cooking, and she ended up dumping the whole thing in like 2-3 trash bags after only cooking for a couple hours. She had the package still in the top of the kitchen trash can, and the sell by date was almost a week out. She called them and told them about the smell, and they said to bring in either the receipt or the package, and they would swap it out or refund it. She got some managers name she talked to, and I asked for him when I got there. Showed him the package, and he got me another one. In and out in less than 5 minutes.
