From 2000-2015 if we are talking popularity, remaining relevant, and having a major influence on the music scene:

Jack white
John Mayer
RHCP although they span past this
Foo fighters - not a big fan, but they have remained relevant this whole time. They've had a long run
Beyonce
Jay z
Kanye

I'm only really a fan of White, Mayer and RHCP with Frusciante along with some Kanye. I'm just trying to think of bands or artists that have been the top dogs during these years.

Guns N Roses didn't change music as much as they were the epitome of their genre. They didn't start a new genre; they were its epitaph. In my opinion, Kiss was a much more influential band because it was their sound, and more importantly their look, that paved the way for 80's hair metal and Glam rock.

GnR was the beginning of the end of hair metal. GnR, along with Metallica, was dirty, gritty, and grimy where hair metal was glitz and glam, teased hair and makeup. Grunge then came in and delivered the death blow to hair metal but it was GnR that went the first few rounds with the genre.

Instead of a genre maybe this period will be remembered for the simultaneous and contradictory emergence of downloading/streaming and resurgence of vinyl.

Tough and loaded question.

I'd say Pearl Jam and Tool...both of them put out debut albums in the early 90's and both have audiences who are very loyal from those born in 1950 to those born in 2000.

I don't know about changing the landscape or movements or anything like that but Beyonce is the biggest artist since Madonna/Michael Jackson and its not close.

Unfortunately reality shows like American idol or the voice.

Everyone is about the same, unless you wear dark eyeshadow and have a different color streak in your hair, then that gives you a punk rock edge.

Bands that mattered in history wouldn't have been accepted on there. Yet for the past 15 years it's been a sort of standard for mainstream music.

It's unfortunate, copies of imitations, basically a big karaoke contest. Boring, dumbed down.

Nothing new or innovative in this period so I will say the reunion bands for those five plus years.

Going with the American Idol vibe, one trend that has not been mentioned has been the "Diva" movement: female singers with big, bold voices.

With singers like Whitney, or Mariah, or Celine, they came on the scene and were then labeled Divas. But with the rise of American Idol, "Diva" is a musical genre unto itself. There are countless "hot chicks with booming voices" who really don't separate themselves from each other. Is there really a difference between Pink, or Christina, or Beyonce?

The only ones to really separate themselves in terms of true quality and talent are Lady GaGa and Adele. However, Gaga has had to re-focus her path (for the good, IMO) because Miley Cyrus out "shocked" her. Adele is facing the real possibility of being left behind because her third album is taking so long to be released. I'm sure it will be really good, but people are tired of waiting, and may just forget about her.

It's only been 4 years for Adele. Why is that too long?

In this day and age that's way too long to drop off the face of the earth. And let's face it, she has done just that. It's not like she's touring or making the occasional appearance on graham Norton, Jools Holland, jimmy Kimmel or Jimmy Fallon's shows.

I was kind of obsessed with her a couple years ago, but have since become obsessed with a couple other groups.

I think she's pushing the envelope of how long such a young artist can stay out of the spotlight. She has the potential to be an "all-timer", but she needs a much bigger catalog--IMHO.
