What about a "mechanic" position? There are many companies that work on high-end medical eqpt. like MRI and catscan machines. Their minimum requirements are generally an EE degree. They start around 60 but move to 75ish with some experience.

The travel is generally 3-4 days to a week. The thing that makes it attractive to you is that with some companies, you can live almost anywhere, as long as it is close to an airport.

You're looking for a EE job with below a 3.0 and no internship experience? Best of luck...

And it's almost totally because of timing. The semester after I started, UNO stopped transferring GPAs, opting instead to simply transfer over hours, not grades. My UNO GPA (which is where I've taken ~85% of my legit EE classes) is very good. I know that I deserve to face the consequences of my tomfoolery at LSU when I started, but it's bullshite that 6 months timing is the reason that I have a ~2.8GPA instead of a 3.2.

The presentation that Entergy had at UNO had at least 70 students, although only half were EE.

I've seen a decent number of these types of positions, particularly in the marine field. Kind of glorified technicians with EE degrees. They pay fairly well, but my major problems with them are:
a) I didn't work my arse off and learn so much to be a glorified technician
b) this kind of work will not apply towards getting PE certification as it will not involve working under a PE.

I can get over A, but B is a big deal for me. I desperately want to get my PE certification so that I can do after hours consulting work. I'm willing to sacrifice money now to accomplish this.

Thanks, but as I've said, Entergy wants nothing to do with me (not blaming you for not reading a long arse thread).

That's what I always assumed. Not happening in SELA, though. I know a lot of people in this thread are having success (and those are the people that I wanted to hear from), but I feel like no matter how hard I work and how knowledgeable I am, I will never be able to live the lifestyle that I expected to have when I started my education.

I think you've got the general idea. It's all about getting your foot in the door and then taking advantage of the opportunity to prove yourself. In most fields experience and references will trump GPA after a certain point but obviously getting there is the tricky part.

I don't know how it is in the EE field, but in other fields there are cities where even mediocre people are in demand. Dallas and Houston, for example, are popular places for mediocre people to find jobs.. I'm an underachiever, myself.

Not only have I looked into each city for a job, but I've looked into real estate in both cities. They're both cheaper than NOLA. I'm very familiar with the costs in NOLA, and one of the badass places I saw in downtown Houston that cost $350k would have been at least twice that in NOLA's WHD. I'm willing to live a lesser lifestyle in NOLA to stay close to family and friends, but I'm looking hardcore at the major Texas cities as a ~3 year experience. Nice to be an hour flight from NOLA, too.

Sorry, I thought you were within months of being in a financial bind.

There are many electric companies throughout the south. Some are publicly traded and some are local govt. entities. Have you approached any others that are not ETR?

I've applied to about 25 positions over the past two months. I don't bother with the jobs that want 7+ years experience. I know that I don't have a shot at the positions asking for 5 years experience, but I do anyway.

And it sounds really stupid coming from someone that has access to NOLA family/friends as a priority, but I'd honestly rather live and work in a city that I like in the NE/NW than a city I hate a 3 hour drive from NOLA. I'll start applying to jobs in Jackson and Birmingham if I'm desperate, but I'd rather work in Portland ME, Dallas/Houston, Charleston, or Savannah even though they aren't within a Friday afternoon's drive away.

If it makes a difference in career advice, I'll never be in a hardcore financial bind. For the next year or so, I can live with family members and work for little or nothing if it results in long-term financial/career success.

Want to link me to that? I'm paying way too much in Houston

And no one really lives in downtown Houston. Midtown, Montrose, and the heights are more popular

I've gone to my googler history and it's being a twat with Zillow. Any zillow site that I try to bring up brings me to general listings instead of the direct link to the places I've visited.

This isn't the place, I was thinking of, but it's close to it:
LINK /

Looks downtowny based on pics from the roof.
That place in NOLA CBD/WHD would cost at LEAST $1m.

Been with the railroad 3 years been qualified as an engineer for 1 year and am being called to the seat this week.. Going to run in Texas.. They are calling up engineers like crazy.. I went from 46 above me to now only 8 in a week in a half.. It could change back just as quickly but we're moving freight... You have to be here a year before you can go to engine service though, they're not hiring engineers straight off the street.... Good luck to you..

Oh.. Wrong "engineer".. My bad..

That's midtown. I can see my office from my balcony.

I almost went with the loft, but I heard that complex is very loud. I'm at mcgowen @ bag by about 5 blocks from there

I think the townhouse prices in midtown are outrageous
