Upgrading RAM in a MacBook Pro 15"?

I don't know a lot about laptops... My skills/experience are in desktop only, and windows-based at that.
How do I figure out which RAM I need to buy? I am comfortable installing it, but it's getting a little too slow.
I just got a new laptop from work and the motherfricker smokes... My personal mac is getting jealous!
TIA.
eta: I bought it around Q3-4 2012..

More info plz.
Model year? How much RAM is in it already? When do you notice it getting slow? i.e. at first boot? When browsing? Using a specific program? etc.
Odds are, SSD is the answer rather than RAM, or at least a better answer.

Regular MBP or retina? Either way go to crucial.com and download and run the scanner. It'll tell you how much ram you have and the max amount you can take?

Use activity monitor to see how much of that 4GB is in use when A) You first boot, and B) when you notice it slowing down significantly. If you aren't using 4GB now, then adding more RAM isn't the solution. Does it already have an SSD? Were 2012's using PCIe SSDs at this point?

Any chance anyone has a working promo code? The ones I'm finding on the deal sites don't seem to be working...
I'm getting 16GB kit (8GBx2) DDR3 PC3-10600 Unbuffered NON-ECC 1.35V 1024Meg x 64

Regular hard drive. Probably the cause of slow-downs, but check your memory usage as I said.

Yeah you need to upgrade your RAM, but your new work pc probably smokes your Mac because it has an SSD.

because it has an SSD.
If I do upgrade, I assume I would need to image my current drive to an external and then repopulate after hardware install?

Alright, so upgrading to a SSD and the RAM, I'll be good to go for another few years?
What specs would I be looking for on a SSD?
Can you guys click this link and give me an idea of what I should be looking for?

I prefer the Samsung evo drives over the crucial drives. The crucial drives seem to cause a lot of heat compared to others. I've actually seen a couple crucial ssd failures, I've yet to see any evo drives fail.

Well, except for the 840 EVO slow-down scandal, I too like Samsung drives. There's nothing wrong with Crucial drives either.

Don't worry about that. Get the capacity you need. If going with Crucial, MX100 or MX200.

Buy an 850 Model
Either way, Samsung was supposed to release another patch this month in order to fix the issue completely after originally supplying a patch in October that repair a large portion of the affected 840 units.
