Microsoft is back with a brand new Surface 3 tablet, but this time things are a little different. While the original Surface RT and Surface 2 tablets didn’t let you run traditional Windows applications, Microsoft is ditching ARM processors and Windows RT to bring a full version of Windows 8.1 to its new Surface 3 with an Intel Atom chip. If you use Chrome, iTunes, Steam, Photoshop, or the thousands of other desktop apps available in Windows then you’ll finally be able to use them on a non-Pro Surface tablet. Microsoft has recognized its confusing mistakes and it’s moving on. Windows RT is a distant memory, a bad nightmare Microsoft wants to forget. Surface 3 will start at just $499, and it's available to pre-order today with devices shipping on May 5th in the US / Canada and May 7th internationally.

so I might buy this to have some PC back in my life.

Check out the Dell Venue Pro line. They have 8 and 11" options with Atom processors, giving you roughly the same options. They're 18-24 months old now, so you may pick them up on the cheap.

Even though this runs 8.1 don't expect miracles. This is best used for browsing and low impact programs.

You have to buy the keyboard separately for $129? They really need to bundle the keyboard with the tablet. You shouldn't be asked to pay for it separately seeing as how the keyboard is an such an integral part of the Surface tablet itself.

I've been looking to get Surfaces for our salesmen and installers so they can be connected to our internal inventory/ordering/scheduling server, but the price has held me back a little. Wouldn't be much to buy our 4 salesmen a surface pro, but to buy them for all of our install trucks would be quite a bit more. $300 adds up pretty quickly. Saving that much means I get a top of the line Surface Pro for myself instead of a base Surface 3 like the rest of the plebes

As for the keyboard thing, most of the ones I'd be buying wouldn't need a keyboard. The salesmen would need one, but the installers wouldn't need one.

Out of curiosity, why not Androids or iOS Minis?

Or the Venue Pro 8 (5000), also clocking in at $200 new with microsd expandability, full windows, standard (microUSB) charger, bluetooth...?

If 8" display is the holdup, I understand. If tablet-sized full Win8 is the goal, check it out. Of the 8" windows tablets, it's got the best reviews. There are others out there, but this is, as far as I am concerned from the reviews I've read, the top choice of cheap, 8" non-RT tablets.
