How would that change with Jay Z's new service? And I have always argued that torrents are great for smaller artists because people will download and listen to their music when they likely would never have heard or bought their album in the first place.
Never said it would be different. But I assume since it costs more it could pay more?
I love spotify

So radio is still free, right?

I heard a good argument against spotify from some friends who work in the industry in Nashville.
To paraphrase, the non-famous, non-super rich song writers, sound technicians, etc. get paid nearly nothing from their portion of streaming royalties, especially compared to traditional album sales.
My counter was it's still more than the nothing they get from torrents.
The Deadspin piece has a pretty good short take on the situation in that the market, through streaming, was course correcting itself. This is IMAX 3D of the music industry. Find ANY way to try and bring "value" to the product to keep prices/revenue at a certain level.
The market was correcting itself to the true price of music within the now flooded area of "entertainment," and some people aren't happy with it.
This one will backfire, except that there's a ton of money backing it so we'll have the wart on the industry for a little while.

$19.99 per month for music I cannot own?! You crazy for this one Hov!
For $20, can't you just download a couple of whole albums and have them forever in you collection?
Posted on 3/31/15 at 8:06 am to Black n Gold
$20 is probably average for 1 album.
Which is absurd.

Damn. That's almost as much as the pre-digital era. Makes you grateful for the early 2000's period.

That's what I was wondering. If so expect bootlegging to get even bigger.

the non mainstream artists depend on streaming services to promote their records and to get people to show up to shows/concerts and buy a t-shirt and maybe a vinyl with a download code or something.

So you're telling me I not only get to keep using Spotify for less money, I get to frick over people like Jay Z and Kanye in the process?
Posted on 3/31/15 at 8:23 am to SlowFlowPro
I'm confused. Why would I pay Jay-Z $20/month, when my satellite radio subscription runs me $5? And as SFP said, CD's are $5-$10 on Amazon. Is the additional $15/month just to hear those assholes on that stage?

They say that if you listen to the super high quality music on Tidal through your super high quality Beats by Dre head phones, your head will actually implode on itself, from both the unmatched clarity and unbelievable douchiness.

that's going to happen with video streaming services, too, which is going to piss off cord cutters
The thing that works in cord cutters favor is that it's very hard to negotiate exclusivity with all of the different cable carriers.

Tidal won't work with Beats by Apple. Beats by Apple now only work with iTunes and the Beats music service.

My bad, let me clarify.
The artists represented here probably average $20 an album on iTunes, which is where most people but digital albums these days.

Jack white is leaving spotify?

I'm not current on all this shite, but I hope you're just joking. You can really buy headphones that only work with certain music services?

Most albums on iTunes are $10-$12. Even Kanye's

You think West Coast Dr. Dre is going to let his headphones work with East Coast Jay-Z's music service? This is the rap feud for a new millennium.
