The difference comes from linebacker Dannell Ellerbe’s deal. It was originally believed that a $2.1 million roster bonus due April 1 would count against the Miami Dolphins’ salary cap. Instead, it will count against the Saints’ cap at $700,000 per year from 2015-17.

They’ll probably need to create about $2 million more in salary-cap space to fit in their draft picks, barring trades. And they’ll need even more if they plan to add any other free agents above the veteran minimum salary level.

That number is wrong. Loomis just stated a week ago that we were $1.7 million under the cap. I think he would know better than anyone.

That doesn't make any sense. Why would the roster bonus be prorated?

Something I just learned the other day from over the cap is that every team has about half a mil of their cap put aside for offseason workout payments (each player earns $500 a day and you are credited money back for players that didn't workout every day).

And yes we were $1.7m under. Less the $500k makes it about $1.2m. Less the Ellerbe bonus (which I also heard was going to be on us and is prorated to help with our cap; originally it was thought to be on Miami) would put us around $500k.

Being that the Ellerbe bonus hadn't kicked in at the time Loomis was correct at that time. Come Wednesday that number will come down.

And as always there's discrepancy in the numbers reported from different sources. GMs and the NFLPA are the only 100% reliable sources.
