Something along the lines of him being in a "denounce Jesus or die" situation and very publicly refusing to deny Jesus.

This really an awesome prayer, because to deny him, he would be delusional. Now to believe everything that is taught about him, is also delusional.

you really think some other entity is purposefully setting off events as as test?

There is an illusory entity, but it is not satan, it is simply a tiny part of our own mind called ego, and it is followed by 99.9% of the population, and that number is probably low.

In fact I would say that the only 1 who never bought into the lie, and completely transcended the ego was Jesus.

It's easy to blame it on something we think is outside of us, the thing that lies to us, and leads us to harm others and our selves, to whatever degree is not outside of us.

That being said, it's okay, because it has been overcome, and the outcome is certain. The key is to quit blaming it on something else, there are no victims, we chose, and continue to choose our experience. Only a change of mind will bring us to the awareness of this

How is this determined?

Personal observation. I should say almost none of them are doing it who I know anything about. I'll stipulate that perhaps someone somewhere actually is.

Well, as I was taught in bible school, confusing God with Satan is called blasphemy, and is the only unforgivable sin.

No, that is incorrect. Satan is an agent of God, the tempter. God tasks Satan with creating temptations to test the faith of his people. Just read the book of Job. It is not unforgivable to mistake Satan for God, to err is human. What is unforgivable to to knowingly reject God and worship Satan instead.
