This guy's thesis is that modern society is too full of choices and the myriad options we have every day is lowering our quality of life.
I think this is complete and utter bullshite. What say the OT?

What do they mean by quality of life? Seems like an interesting podcast. I'll have to tune in.

Why not? Diffusion of choice is a pretty well documented phenomena. Example - you're at a party and you're offered ice cream - chocolate or vanilla. Easy decision every time, and you're happy with it. But you're offered one of 37 flavors, maybe you take 5 minutes to think about it, or you worry the whole time you picked the wrong one, maybe you never pick because you can't decide, etc
I don't see why you can't extrapolate that to larger issues on a larger scale - what career, who to marry, what to believe, etc etc

basically that we are too stressed out from the "opportunity loss" we incur when we make a choice. Like if I buy a sony radio I can't help but feel some regret that I didn't get a pioneer...and this effect is compounded by the multitude of choices that we make every day and causing depression, suicide, blah blah blah

It may make life more stressful, as there are a multitude of choices for nearly everything, but it certainly does not make life worse.
The market is simply a reflection of what people want, and as wealth accumulates, the variety of products and services also multiplies.

Ted Talks are a place to discuss ideas. I personally don't agree with him, but at least it fosters discussion.

I can see this. I remember going through quite the paralysis by analysis. I waited so long to make a decision on what car to buy that my parents decided not to wait any longer and decided for me that my mom would buy herself a car and I would get hers. I had spent weeks researching for no reason.

People who obsess over every decision will never be happy in life, even if their choices are limited because they would be pissed due to their limited choices.

It's understandable, but at what point do you stop limiting choices?
2? 3?
You eventually get to a point where you pigeonhole a whole group into a limited amount of choices and a large portion are unhappy due to that limitation.

Too many choices can be really annoying. Let's say I want toothpaste. I have to look at a fricking 100 different kinds-brands,flavors,whiteness protection, cavity protection, all in different sizes with different prices. It's so annoying.
I would much rather go to a restaurant with 7 choices on the menu than one with 100. There becomes a point when there are just too many choices.
Obviously it's not something the government should intervene in, not that they would.

I heard that on TV once. False. I want cookies and cream or vanilla. I won't worry about making the right decision. I like those. Boom. I'm done and eating ice cream
