False. He could have gone Sunday. Again, his issue was with back to back days. I believe he has thrown Wednesday (might have been a Tuesday) and Friday this year.
ETA: He has 10 saves. Not all of them came on weekends.
He's also closed on back to back nights. The issue is whether or not he's been as effective.
I'm pretty confident in saying that if we see him in a 2 inning save situation on Friday...the coaches are going to be less than confident in him on a Sunday. That doesn't mean he wouldn't pitch depending on the situation. It just means that when they make that decision on Friday...they do it knowing it could effect Sunday and will definitely affect Saturday.
And, that was my point. Maineri wasn't willing to commit Stallings to 2+ innings in the 7th. But he was willing to make that decision in a tie game from the 9th on.

Baseball wasn't played during that world series and you know it!

Especially when you refuse to bunt the runners over when you have 1st and 2nd with zero out in a tie ballgame in the 11th.
That was a much worse decision IMO.

quote:That's really two completely different situations. There a procedure for regulation. A script. They didn't follow it when they brought him in late. I don't think it was ever a plan for him to go deep. It was a mistake from the start.

Friday wasn't a save situation though.

Without reading through all the responses, here is my theory on what happened with regard to Stallings.
Winning the first game of a series is critical. It is very hard to win the last two games to win the series. LSU had to do this vs. Arkansas.
I believe that Maneiri put in Stallings gambling that LSU would score a run in the bottom half to win the game. But LSU didn't. So he gambled another inning with Stallings. And again LSU did not score.
By then, Maneiri was committed to Stallings. He wanted this Friday night game badly. So he kept riding Stallings for 4 innings and he got bit in the arse for it since he burned Stallings for the remaining 2 games.
It would not have been so bad if LSU had won the game. Losing the game made it that much worse. But Maneiri brought it upon himself in one instance by not bunting with runners on first and second with no outs. Bregman brought it upon Maneiri when he was hit by the grounder hit by Hale.
And I want to reassure everyone that the no bunting argument is NOT hindsight. I was telling Maneiri into the TV to bunt for the entire at bat. It was an easy decision! Maneiri had the exact same situation a couple of games prior to Friday's game and he chose not to bunt then either. And again it did not work out. It will be interesting to see what he does if this situation comes up again.

Everybody and their mother was screaming into the TV. It's indefensible and fans have a right to be pissed. The guy gets paid big bucks and can't make the simplest baseball decision ever when the game is on the line. You're right, it isn't hindsight, it isn't "just baseball." It was stupidity.

The baseball gods just didn't have it in the cards for us that night gt

I thought Mainieri made a pretty ingenious move in the 8th inning of a tied game by pinch hitting for one of your hottest hitters just because the other team brought in a lefty. Let's overlook the fact that the previously discussed hot hitter hasn't been retired by a lefty pitcher all season long. We bring in the righty, to which UK counters by changing pitchers to a right hander. It was super genius for Paul Mainieri then to waste that pinch hitter and replace him with a true freshman with 2 career bat attempts. This same true freshman later bats in a key spot in the game, but Mainieri has no idea if the kid can bunt or not, because he's only had two at bats in his entire LSU career.
Great move!!!

Yea, I'm on team NO BUNT and was wondering why the frick we ain't bunting here.
I'm not a fan of bunting all game long but right there you fricking bunt the ball.
And after you move the runners to second and third with just one out, you debate a squeeze bunt.

I'm willing to chalk up Friday as a bad game. Even coaches are entitled to them, and every decision he made bit him in the arse.
Even with that, this team could have and should have won or swept this series. He can't control Bregman being unable to dodge a groundswell. He can't control an injury to Fraley and his sub making the dumbest play on a ball.
