The fact of the matter is that a number of members of COS don't know about the Xenu story because they haven't reached a certain rank. The COS leaders have tried everything to distanced themselves from this part of the religion.

The blackmailing, fair game and disappearances are pretty well known imo.

Not at all actually. Well known to people who are interested to look. I'd bet anything more people know about xenu than they do about any of that other shite, or even the litigious nature of the organization.

the typical response is "well, I don't see how it's any crazier than other religions" most people do not understand why others find scientology so objectionable.

Just getting into this but wanted to pose this question: Why doesn't a person or group of people fake join this church, make up a bunch of lies about themselves to offer up in these audit sessions, then eventually join the Sea Org and record the innerworkings of these people including the abuse? Is it that hard to get some hidden cameras in their buildings?

I've only known one Scientologist, and he was very smart. He just got weirder and weirder through college and eventually went to work for them and now runs some kind of facility that they own related to L. Ron Hubbard. His mind must be completely bonkers by now.

There may be others I am not aware of, but Scientology is the only "religion" I am aware of that has, at its center, an electronic device for measuring your spiritual/mental attainment. How anyone makes it beyond that phase (which is seemingly the first step?) is crazy to me.

Question for HR attorneys and politically in-the-know: does the designation of Scientology as a religious organization by the IRS thus determine that someone who defines their religion as a Scientology mean that they are protected from discrimination in employment?

it doesn't matter, if the church turns their legal attention to you and you aren't what forrest gump would call a "gozillionaire", you're headed for the poor house

but to answer your question, I would certainly imagine it would be a title 7 frick up for sure

I saw the part where they said they threw people overboard.

It was unclear if they retrieved them or just threw them in the water to die.

I think it was an excellent point made by one of the guys that the IRS, a collection of accountants and attorneys, is the group making a determination of what a religion or religious organization is.

it's not a hard designation to make...when you charge people for goods and services as 99% of your income, don't believe in a deity, don't even present yourself as a religion (seriously, they go out of their way to present themselves as an addendum to whatever religion you prescribe to)

it probably didn't help their case that they had been busted in a massive infiltration of the FBI, IRS and other Federal GOs

that was 1/2 the anticipation for people who were already interested in scientology...holy shite, I can't believe they had the balls to do this...and yes, lawyered up to high hell

for people who like the south park episode, go check out the last two lines in the episode.

they sue, and they use the great the legal system as a weapon, an effective one too

I found it surprising that the IRS caved on their designation as a religious organization to simply make a bunch of petty lawsuits go away. It's hard to imagine that they caved to that kind of bullying and blackmail. It probably came down to some politician or group of politicians not wanting their dirty laundry exposed.

That's not the only reason. They hired an army of investigators to follow IRS employees and find their dirty secrets. They did this for years. David Miscavige walked into the IRS unannounced, got a meeting with the director, and a few hours later, they were tax exempt

with all of the technology in the world, I am very surprised that there is no footage, audio or video, of people being abused or whatever.

It's good to see people researching Scientology. I remember reading Operation Clambake when Anon first started going after them and being tripped out by some of the stories on there. People thought I was full of shite when I told them about musical chairs and some of the other classics, now it's all over HBO. There are some crazy youtube videos from well back in the day when there were just a few protestors in clearwater that would just get harassed to hell when they would protest about Lisa McPherson. Look some of those up, it's pretty freakin hilarious.

The whole Xenu.net/Leaked OTIII documents and how it impacted Google/Way Back Machine is a good read too.

I wonder how they compare to that goofball "church" in Kansas that is similarly litigious.

westboro is litigious? I didn't know. I doubt they can compare to scientology in that regard. Walt Disney isn't even that lawsuit crazy
