4/8: Cameron: Harris has gone through a transformation this Spring: ESPN BR 104.5 Podcast

4/2: Scrimmage notes: LF7 4 TDs including swing pass from Harris, Jamal Adams 2 INTs, 1 a pick six

4/1: Tim Flecter Interviews Brandon Harris and Tre'Davious White
Harris talks about roommate DJ Chark's 4.3 speed, talent, and how LF7 is "catching everything thrown to him, making 'receiver-sick catches', catching everything."
Tre' White on Harris: "He has sort of taken control. . I feel like he is the guy who is going to make big time plays and big time throws in Tiger Stadium this year.”

3/31: LSU: Miles & Cameron see progress, little separation at QB: Cameron say Harris has Bionic Arm

quote:

The quarterbacks "got over a hurdle" in Saturday's scrimmage by combining for six touchdown passes, many through extremely tight windows. It was the best scrimmage showing since former Tigers quarterback Zach Mettenberger fired five consecutive touchdowns in a 2012 workout.

"They are ascending at a rapid level," Cameron said. Improved footwork and more confident decision-making from Jennings, who is driving his throws better. Harris is "a little bit more explosive", but has had to sync up his footwork with his strong arm", which he called BIONIC. For the first time in his life, he's having to learn how to anticipate and his anticipation has improved dramatically."

At Spring Break, prolific passing from the QBs remained the most compelling story of spring practice. After Break, 11 practices and 3 closed Scrimmages, with only the Spring Game left, it is an open competition and likely will remain that way.

A tweet between Harris and Adams after the 4/2 scrimmage.

In his 3rd scrimmage recap he praised both QBs rapid growth: 3/28 Scrimmage 3: Miles Praises QBs, Still Looking for Separation Per Miles, as of 3/28 he has not seen separation between the two, still an open and undecided competition:
quote:

Scrimmage 3: (How does the QB battle this year look different from last year?) It’s year two they have really kind of been through it now and we expect more out of them. We expect them to not only execute the offense, their play, but also give us experience at the play caller, understand where we want to go, what we are supposed to do, and you know just a little heightened expectation (Are you seeing that?) Yeah, oh yeah. (What will tell you they are really better than they were last year?) I already know they are better than they were last year. But to find a real quality QB and have separation from one to the other, that’s what I am looking for, and you know, I am, I am not necessarily seeing that, and I think that the turn of the day, when one day it is certainly Anthony Jennings, that has probably performed better on more days, and then other days you know it’s been Brandon Harris

Post practice March 26th: A confident Brandon Harris refused to take off his pads after a day with no INTs 'where everybody caught a touchdown'. He talks throwing passes to spread receivers "Like a kid in a Candy Store", greatly improved strength, footwork, his fast wrist speed, ability to wrist flick a 60 yd+ pass, progressions, opening up the run game with 8 WRs, soon to be 12, TEs, and check downs to the RBs, running the offense with an effortless feel. He praised Cameron for working him hard, mentoring him, answering his questions and believes he is one of the best OC's, if not the best in the FBS. A nagging mild high-ankle sprain suffered in the AUB game is completely healed.

In the first scrimmage Harris reported having 4 passing and 2 rushing TDs, and a 4 TD per scrimmage average. His favorite pass is the 56 yd TD to DJ Chark, who is having a great year, having caught at least 5 TD passes in 3 scrimmages. Throwing a lot of TDs, with no TOs and not missing a check at the line of scrimmage since the ONE at AUB, the offense is really improving. He said that he and AJ are completely different in abilities and the coaches put each one in the best situation to succeed, to accentuate their strengths, and build an explosive and balanced offense. He and AJ are both being worked hard. He is only in competition with himself to be the best he can be. He played well in Tiger Stadium last year, enjoys watching the NMSU game where he went 7 for 7, and that the Auburn game has been motivation for everyone. Regarding off-field development, "I don't get in trouble, my Dad (Diesel) would kill me", but said he stays in the playbook, film study, and over-utilizes coaches and past QBs, and other experts, asking for help improving, wishing he could have spent a year with Mett or a 5th year senior QB. It would be okay if Miles never mentioned his name because he is happy with improving and confident about the year.

Brandon gets the nod in the first, Miles, being deceptively honest, supposedly flatly stated that AJ was Crisper and more productive in the second. Well, when you listen to and transcribe the presser after the second scrimmage, the first mostly live contact scrimmage for the QBs, it is not so clear nor does it correlate with the Harris interview:

3/21: Miles Breaks Down QB Play in Second Scrimmge
quote:

Miles: 130 play scrimmage, live tackle, we had the QBs live for the most part….At QB I think both guys are continuing to come, but uh, I think today, uh, uhhh, Jennings, uh, you know, probably just a little bit more productive overall, and uh, uh, eh uh…..I think the QBs are still in a, um, very competitive position amongst each other. To be honest with you I think, uh, Justin, uh, McMillan had a nice day today, thought he uh, made uh, a couple of very, very nice plays early on in the scrimmage and really right on through, so..(What did Jennings do out there that you really liked?) He just, he just, you know pretty crisp with his passes, you know threw a couple of TD passes, things like that (Do you think this spring he is playing with any more of a chip on his shoulder?) I think it is a very competitive spring. I think we are putting a lot in on them, and uh, I uh, you know I think that there is a, uh, I think that it is a good competition (How did Brandon do today?) Umm, statistically I’m not really familiar, nor do I really need to be, but uh, umm, eh you know, made some really big plays, both with feet and his hands, I mean throws, but uh, and still, you know, not as productive, and you know, uh, when you get to the film, and you know when you rotate guys, you wonder, you know, uh, was the route exactly the way it was supposed to be, you know do we have a protection issue, did he have to scramble to get it off, you know, all those pieces that you put together once you get, uh, you know film study, so uh, uh, not as, not as,uh, I think he is more capable than what he showed today.

4/14: Scrimmage One Videos Spark High Interest: 30,000+ downloads as of 4/3 - seeing is believing.

Video Factcheck: If KTII had not posted his interception which showed AJ locked on Dural in double coverage and the ball just dying 10 yds short, we would have been left to believe Harris threw it. It was a terrible pass, from the shotgun, which Miles described as “It wasn’t a bad pass, but it could’ve been thrown better. It may have been by Brandon Harris.” It took AJ's pass longer to go 35 yds than Harris' 56 yd TD toss to Chark. Harris threw a 2 sec laser to DJ, his roommate and the fastest player on the team. It was DJ's first reception and TD, now he has 5 or more, not counting practices. He hit him in stride with a bullet at NFL speed: 56 yds in 2 secs = 57.3 mph, elite NFL speed, the record being 59-60 mph on short throws. It has only been 2.5 months since the end of the season and AJ is still AJ, and Harris has the bionic NFL cannon, makes quick reads, and "continues to make big plays with his arm and feet", Miles.

KTII's first INT in Tiger Stadium “One of those defensive backs,” Miles said. “It wasn’t a bad pass, but it could’ve been thrown better. It may have been by Brandon Harris.”

Brandon Harris hits DJ Chark in stride w/56 yd Laser

"Bionic-Armed" Harris has a cannon. He has a quick release, is a strong, fast runner, has good balance, and makes quick reads and accurate throws on the run - all qualities of a good dual threat QB. That means more explosive offensive passing plays utilizing 3+WR sets, which will spread the defense and open up the run game in a modern, balanced, attack. Miles has even mentioned the offense is functioning better using more pace...there is certainly a lot of untapped tactical potential there.

Slowing down the original video, 1 second to look left, 1 second to run left, 1 second to spin and reverse back, 1 second to stop, locate a receiver, <1/2 sec to set up and flick a 56 yd pass.

This play is DJ Chark's (pronunciation Shark) first pass & TD and he gets to flash his superior speed to shake off KTII on a perfect strike that hits him in full stride.

DJ is the same size and wt as KTII, 6'2" 185, but he has been timed at 4.3-4.4 and KT 4.57. DJ has always been touted as the fastest player on the team. This is what Dural had to say about him on Jan 27: "He's a guy who can help us stretch the defense out because he's a guy who runs 4.4., 4.3. He runs real fast and is long and athletic and can really jump,(37" vertical as a recruit). So coming into spring, if he has a good spring, he can be a guy who can really help us out next year."

Harris throws from the 32 and DJ hauls it in on the 12 so you have the ball traveling 56 yds in just over 2 seconds or in the range of 54-57 mph, (56 yds in exactly 2 seconds = 57.3 mph) which is record NFL speed for a long throw. The NFL record is 59-60 mph for shorter passes (Manning & Kaepernick with Elway estimated to have thrown over 60). It would also be really interesting to know formation, shotgun?, and how many WR's were lined up, etc. There is one TE, Jacory Washington, who has Duke Riley tied up more than 5 yds downfield as an eligible receiver, so I am guessing 3 WR. The defense looked spread out and the O-Line had things really under control Miles had to jump back 5 yds, but he really got to see Harris' strong arm, quick release, and "ability to make plays with his feet". There is a LOT of receiver talent and speed and Tony Ball says he is focused on building their confidence and getting more guys involved. Chark and Quinn went without TDs last fall and Chark had zero receptions. So, Ball is off to a good start. That play was a confidence builder for DJ and validation of the flashes we saw from Harris who had a Scoring Efficiency (ppm) over 2X higher than Mariotta. Harris and Dupre set Freshman scoring records. 4 of Dupre's 5 TDs and his long catch at Auburn came in a span of 5 quarters of playing time with Harris, 2 TDs in 23 seconds vs MSST.

3.15 ppm for Harris in 9 of 11 possessions for 63 pts in 20 minutes vs Miss State and NMSU
1.66 ppm for Oregon (highest in nation)
.77 ppm on season for LSU = 95th of 128
.38 ppm SMU lowest in nation at 128, Vanderbilt lowest in SEC at .48 ppm 126th
.21 ppm for LSU vs Ole Miss, ALA, and ARK
.34 ppm last four reg season games (.53 ppm vs A&M = 123rd in nation) (A&M 17 pts in 18.5 min = .91 ppm)

Harris has a cannon. He has a quick release, is a strong, fast runner, has good balance, and makes quick reads and accurate throws on the run - all qualities of a good dual threat QB. Hopefully this means we see more "explosive" offensive passing plays for quick scores utilizing 3+WR sets, which spread defenses and open up the run game. Remember Steele's opening comments that with spread HUNH offenses in the SEC and top-ranked Power 5 schools you can expect 3-4 or more explosive plays per game, rather than one like it was a couple years ago, and you have to have an offense that can keep up. The 2014 70/30 run/pass ratio was so unbalanced, with no legitimate pass threat, that even with 20% more run plays, and favorable TOP, the run game scored 50% less than last year and there was only 1 rushing TD in the last 4 SEC games. TOP was due to slow pace and Defensive Scoring Efficiency, not ball control offense. Miles recently mentioned the offense is functioning better using more pace...there is so much untapped tactical potential in the use of a modern FBS offense that uses the pass to set up the run and HUNH to tire defenses. It is the pace of offensive plays that does not allow defenses to rest or substitute and not TOP at a snail's pace: LSU ranked 114th in pace of play @2.3 ppm, the same as last year. It is Pace of Play that determines how tired the defense gets due to lack of substitution and inability to defensively adjust or rest and not TOP at a slow pace of 2.3 ppm.

3/28 Scrimmage 3: Miles Praises QBs, Still Looking for SeparationWith the 3rd scrimmage last Saturday, there are 2 practices next week, Spring Break, two practices the 3rd week in April with the Spring Game on the 18th. Per Miles he has not seen separation between the two, so it is still an open and undecided competition:
quote:

Scrimmage 3: (How does the QB battle this year look different from last year?) It’s year two they have really kind of been through it now and we expect more out of them. We expect them to not only execute the offense, their play, but also give us experience at the play caller, understand where we want to go, what we are supposed to do, and you know just a little heightened expectation (Are you seeing that?) I have heard that Harris has looked sharp and AJ is improved but still lacks the arm and still doesn't check down his WR's. I have basically came to the conclusion that Miles doesn't even pay attention at these scrimmages. His comments on AJ looking crisper were hilarious considering CC says Harris has shown more improvement

Slow your roll there. Everybody is glad to hear that Harris is stepping up his grade, whether that means he's the starter or whether he pushes AJ to the next level. But that's a heck of a lot of analysis on post-scrimmage interviews and two passes. In live contact, Harris would have gotten leveled on that Chark TD.

We're also not about to become a HUND. It's gonna be the same ground and pound style with a passing game to clear out the box and some tempo wrinkles.

The offense will take a huge step forward, but Harris isn't about to remind people of Russell and Davey in his first year getting significant snaps.

That's about how many catches our Top WR's averaged per game last season. Not the team's Top WR, the games Top WR. Good to know we're on the same path.

These are TD numbers per game, not receptions. AJ had only 5 TDs in the last 10 regular season games or avg of 0.5 TD per game passing, not 4TDs+ per game or multilple TD receptions for a single player. We are definitely not on the same page.

Returning players: Travin Dural (37 catches, 758 yards, 7 TDs), Trey Quinn (17-193), John Diarse (15-275, 3 TDs), Malachi Dupre (14-318, 5 TDs), D.J. Chark (no catches), Avery Peterson (no catches), Kevin Spears (no catches), Tony Upchurch (redshirt)

Diarse had one TD in the first game and one in the last, plus one in the Bowl game. Dural and Dupre were the only ones with a game each with multiple TDs.

AJ had 2 TDs. Unless McMillan, who was complimented had TDs, Harris had 4 which has been his average.

LSU: Miles, Cam see progress, little separation at QB

The same two candidates, junior Anthony Jennings and sophomore Brandon Harris, are competing for the second consecutive spring, but 10 practices and two scrimmages haven't produced clarity. Asked Monday whether the starting job is still up for grabs, Miles replied, "Very much." LSU practices twice this week before spring break, then twice more before the April 18 spring game.

quote:

"I would like to have already made the decision because that would mean I’ve got Brett Favre or Tim Tebow or somebody like that," Miles told ESPN.com, "but it takes some time for those guys to grow up. We’re going to allow that to happen. "I'm not necessarily pleased with the progress thus far, but I do recognize that there’s some real progress being made."

"I'm watching both of these guys and I know all the things they should have learned, and I'm confident that both guys are moving beyond some of the struggles they've had."

quote:

Harris is "a little bit more explosive" than Jennings, Miles acknowledged, but the sophomore has had to sync up his footwork with his strong arm. According to Cameron, there's a bad habit among bionic-armed quarterbacks: throwing the ball later than they should simply because they can against high school defenses. "You're not going to get away with that in this conference consistently," Cameron said. "He's never had to be a rhythm passer. This sounds crazy, but for the first time in his life, he's having to learn how to anticipate. That's why a lot of guys with big arms fail. They never learn how to anticipate. "Brandon's anticipation has improved dramatically."

quote:

Cameron has seen improved footwork and more confident decision-making from Jennings, who completed 50 percent or less of his attempts in all but two SEC games and eclipsed 60 percent completions just once. Perhaps most important, Jennings is driving his throws better, a must in a league in which few secondaries play off-man or zone coverage.

There really is little controversy over who has the better skill set to play QB at LSU. Development is key. That falls squarely on Coaching. I am confident in Cam but not in Les on QB evaluation.
A concern is the amount of running Harris would do. With our stableof RB's there is little reason to risk a running QB. Mett didn't have to.
Start Brandon, keep him healthy, utilize our Receivers, win SEC Title, win N.C.

I enjoyed the read. You did a great job with it. It is definitely time for Miles to start recognizing that he has a potentially great QB that could be NFL caliber on his team. Why would you turn your back to that for a guy who is less than a game manager? Not bashing Jennings but he was hard to watch.

For most LSU fans, there is only one spring storyline that matters: the quarterback battle between Anthony Jennings and Brandon Harris.

Indeed, the competition between junior Jennings (1,611 passing yards, 11 TDs, 7 INTs in 2014) and sophomore Harris (452 yards, 6 TDs, 3 rushing TDs, 2 INTs) might determine whether the Tigers re-emerge as legitimate contenders in the SEC West or remain in the middle of the pack like last season’s 8-5 club.

Both QBs chose their favorite play of the spring: Jennings chose a running play, Harris the 56 yd pass to his roommate and breakout stare DJ Chark. AJ says the run option is further opening up the offense. Harris's scrambling pass play, showed his strong running, quick release, and Bionic Arm that ended with him hitting 4.3 DJ Chark over KTII for the first of at least 5 TDs Chark had in just the first 3 scrimmages. Harris says if you don't get the ball to Chark soon enough, he will be 80 yds downfield and you will have to throw your arm out.

Last year's Spring QB battle was won by Brandon Harris, just 4 months out of HS, an early enrollee. He threw for three TDs, ran for one TD, and was the top rusher. Anthony Jennings had 1 TD and threw 2 INTs that were returned for touchdowns.

3/28 Scrimmage 3: Miles Praises QBs, Still Looking for SeparationWith the 3rd scrimmage last Saturday, and after having had 2 practices this week, it's 4/3 - Spring Break - with only 2 practices remaining prior to the Spring Game on the 18th. Per Miles he has not seen separation between the two, so it is still an open and undecided competition:
quote:

Scrimmage 3: (How does the QB battle this year look different from last year?) It’s year two they have really kind of been through it now and we expect more out of them. We expect them to not only execute the offense, their play, but also give us experience at the play caller, understand where we want to go, what we are supposed to do, and you know just a little heightened expectation (Are you seeing that?) Cam Cameron was asked who chooses the QB:
quote:

There’s not a program at any level – high school, college or the National Football League – where the head coach doesn’t make the call on the quarterback position. I don’t care how long .. this is my 32nd season....“They bring a lot of talent to the table. Now, it’s the chemistry part and our passing game and even in our zone read, running attack."

Jennings said he is working with Cam and Moffit as is Harris, with Jennings concentrating on delivering a faster ball that does not die at the receiver's feet.

Miles, after the 17-0 loss to ARK, where Harris once again did not make an appearance, was asked "What has Brandon Harris been doing since Auburn?" to which he replied "He has been taking 50% of the snaps and is developing very Well." He also said it was a mistake not getting him more playing time. However, all of the games were either undecided until the end or lost. The only opportunity was the Kentucky game where he came in for the last half of the 4th quarter and played 1.5 series, running 8 yds for a 1st down and was not hampered by the ankle. He also had a 7 yd run against ALA for one play.

This Picture is from the NMSU highlight video below. At the 1:14 mark, Harris pitches right, a forward pass, to Fournette who cuts back left and follows Harris who throws a nice block on the 33 yd "run after catch". This was Fournette's first 100+ yd game, finishing with 122 rushing and this pass with 33 yds after catch.

Brandon Harris Highlights vs NMSU

You can spend too much time looking in the rear view mirror, wishing for concussion-inducing slow play to return, and end up being a bug on the windshield like last year.

Alabama did not do that and they are now a modern offense with explosive plays. Their HUNH Fat Boy play in overtime confused LSU and it was a miracle that 4 guys were able to stop that 300 lb receiver at the goal line.

Pace of Play Rank: PPG and PPM

The Crimson Tide fired off an SEC-high 1,018 plays on offense — 192 more than the previous season. More snaps equaled better production, notably in the passing game. Alabama’s 6,783 total yards of offense was the most in the Saban era.

Blake Sims was the top ranked QB in the SEC and had 7 rushing TDs

Blake Sims 252-for-391 (64.5 percent) 3,487 yards, 28 touchdowns, 10 interceptions, 7 rushing TDs.

Amari Cooper had more receptions than AJ had completions and nearly 1800 yds.

Someone needs to smack Miles in the back of the head so he'll forget the Auburn game. Brandon isn't holding that game against himself anymore. We weren't going to win that game with Jennings either because Auburn is too explosive on offense while we could often only muster 10-13 points

Its fricking practice man, practice you didn't even see.

Im glad harris has convinced you that he has overcome his deficiencies from last year. Just let these dudes battle it out for 6 months and hope we see the improvement we expect. If you think either one of these guys magically turned the corner from where they were last year, during spring ball, ive got some essential oils you simply must try.

Please just pump the brakes, not a soul is going to read that whole thing

Not for nothing, because they did win the SEC with ab efficient passing game, but they focused too heavily on the pass and neglected the run to the detriment of the team.

Give me a dominant run game with a complementary passing attack any day as opposed to vice versa.

2013 is the ideal. We could throw any time we wanted, but were able to lean on Hill to get tough yards and burn clock to close out games.
