Maybe AA didn't get the memo, cause I see pilots leave the cockpit and then there is only one person flying or watching the autopilot

No, It is a law in America since 9/11.

If one leaves the cockpit, one of the stewardess comes in.

Not everyone follows the law. I've witnessed AA not following that law, on several occasions. I've even taken pics of them moving the beverage cart in front of the cockpit door, while it was open, when the pilot went to the head. I was scolded and told not to take pics. I guess, like me, they think a beverage cart blocking the door is ridiculous as well.

I heard this on my way to BR yesterday. They said they could hear the copilot breathing but couldn't raise him on the comm's.

Definitely made it sound intentional.
