For those that don't know, Twitter released an app today called Periscope on iOS that allows anyone to broadcast audio and video live from their smartphone. For those that do know, yes I know Meerkat, an app that has similar functionality, came out a few weeks ago. Periscope has been under development for a year though, and Meerkat was thrown together in a few weeks.

Now, 99.9999% of what will be broadcasted will be useless shite. But I was quickly blown away by its utility from watching the NYC building fire live 10 minutes before I got a notification from Breaking News. Book it, this is another techno game changer.

It does have a few bugs and navigation issues that need to be fixed. Ie, I can't look at a list of the people I follow's recent broadcasts currently. But I'm sure this and other issues will be fixed soon.

ETA: I do foresee some Nightcrawler type shite going down.

So what's going to happen when the first idiot gets themselves killed trying to break news? Will twitter get sued? Not trying to debbie downer your thread but the picture you showed highlights the types of dangerous situations this will be used to report on.

It would be on them, not twitter. Does Apple or Samsung get sued everytime some one wrecks while texting and driving?

Good point, although I'd bet the "real" news channels will run the story of the poor innocent citizen unjustly killed because of a dangerous twitter app into the ground because this is the type of thing dinosaur news agencies probably see as a threat.

As long as Twitter isn't outwardly saying "Go break some news" or directly providing incentive/reward for doing so, I think they're safe. It's really no different than any other site hosting media.

When I think about it, it's actually strange to me that this hasn't been done before.

It has been done before, but now that LTE is almost ubiquitous and it is built on top of a social graph it has the traction it needs to take off.

That's probably why this is the first time I'm hearing of mobile live streaming. If it's built into a standalone app made by a no-name startup, chance of failure is pretty high.

so what happens if i decide to broadcast a live sports event? or point my phone at some Tv show for anyone to watch?

it's a game changer, i agree, but old media is going to come down on these apps fast once they takeoff.

all the biggest apps hit iOS first. Facebook, Instagram, Yak, whisper, flipboard, whatsapp, Pinterest, uber, snapchat, etc.

Developing for android sucks, especially when your app has to be compatible with an OS version that is 3 years old. unless, of course, you would rather release your app to only a small portion of android users.

Easier to test capabilities on the platform with less users?

Also, probably easier considering all I phones have much the same hardware to work with.

Boring story that Gyllenhaal brought to a level of entertainment I wouldn't have thought possible.

I've been checking out Periscope for a few days and while it's entertaining, when something big goes down it is going to be incredible. Enabling every iPhone on the scene to live broadcast in high quality is the very definition of game changing. It is gonna be mind blowing when it has it's first big moment.

It needs to be pushed out to Android ASAP.
