The F115 from Yamaha is generally considered bulletproof, been out since early 2000s and predates their F150. I'm not a merc fan at all but a buddy works at a dealer and keeps telling me they're much improved over my days working at a yamaha/merc dealer. Yammys on all my boats over the years and don't see that changing

Yamaha Suzuki Honda all great motors. Evinrudes are good now too. Look for a deal. if you buy the Florida Boat trader they sell new in the crate but last years models and older in there with complete warranties and usually save you a bunch of money

Bought a 2014 Yamaha 150 4 stroke for my 2001 logic bay boat and love it. Dumped that POS merc in the back pasture and it will rot there. Now if anybody needs a stainless steel prop to fit a 2001 merc 125 I can be persuaded to go to the pasture lol

Mercury seems to have earned a bad reputation with some on this site, but they would change most minds if given the proper chance. They have really stepped their game up over the last decade. Mercury engines now are extremely reliable and their rigging, gauges and props are light years ahead of the other manufacturers. Their new FourStokes (75, 90, 115, and 150) are the lightest in their class with the most displacement. We have installed several on commercial boats that get the hell beat out of them and they don't quit.
OP - If you are looking at new engines for a boat that already has Mercury rigging, look into the new 150 FourStroke. It was designed with the re-power market in mind. The motor can be picked up brand new for just over $10k and would only require a cheap wiring harness adapter to make it work on your boat. A simple SmartCraft cable and tachometer could be added to give you all of you engine information straight from the PCM and will give you fault codes and descriptions should a problem occur. Look us up if you would like more info. We are located in Baton Rouge and can also take a look at any used engine you may find if you decide to go that route.

I was gonna suggest the new merc 150, it really is an amazing little engine. They made it so that a trained monkey with one arm could perform all the regular maintenance. Plus it's weight combined with its displacement place it at the top of 150 four strokes right now.

Yeah, Hondas suck. As do all the Japanese engines.
I guess you run one of those super reliable Johnson/evinrudes huh?

He may be but he's right. Do a google search or search it on the hull truth. You won't find a single negative comment on the new merc 150.

My podnuh, has one on his 21' Sea Pro. The only thing that worry me is the electronic throttle cable vs a hard cable for shifting and throttle cable.

Sadly affordable and new outboards don't go together anymore. I would expect to pay $10k + rigging for a new 115 four stroke. You can get a 25 hp hand tiller in the $3k range which should push a light 16' aluminum hull.

How many Mercury engines have corroded into useless piles besides the old 225 FourStrokes they bought from Yamaha in the early 2000's? I can show you countless engines from the Asian manufacturers that corroded from the inside out due to inferior metals. If you don't believe me, a simple Google search will reaveal the truth to you. I won't even bring up the direct injection debacle or a flywheel that can't be figured out by a certain favorite manufacturer.

He is. If I owned a shop that makes a living working on Mercury, Id want people to buy them to.
