Just purchased my first shooter game (Battlefield Hardline). I've tried the story mode and it seems a little slow...too much story stuff. So I wanted to play online. The cops vs. robbers thing. I played like 4 times and got 2 kills and died about 685 times. Frustrated, I turned it off and haven't played since.

Is there a practice mode or a cheap game I can play to get the controls down so I don't suck so much?

oh the irony. the single player is practice mode. everyone knows that.

Sorry, not a big gamer. Never played anything other than NCAA or Madden really. If the single player story mode is the practice that's fine I guess. Seems more story than actually playing the game. I'll just stick to madden I guess.

Unless you play any shooter constantly, you stand no chance online. If you're a casual player or usually play other types of games, you're better off not even going online. I abandoned shooters a while ago because I couldn't or wouldn't dedicate the time it took to "git gud nub".

Not even close. Play style in multiplayer FPS is totally different. Tactics are one thing, but the bulk of your skill is going to come from fast reflexes, and some muscle memory from playing the same game engine constantly. And the latter part is the most important thing to accept. The movements/mechanics are going to be different in every game (or graphics engine), so mastering COD for 500 hours won't necessarily make you good at Battlefield/CS/Titanfall/etc. If you don't put in the time practicing in the same game under the same conditions, you won't get better at it. Maybe it's different for console players/controllers, but I know that the longer I play one FPS with M+KB, the worse I get at virtually every other FPS.

There are people who've played Battlefield games for years, logging a full-time job's worth of hours into them daily. There are cult-like devotees not unlike Counterstrike players. Obviously, casuals will never be able to keep up with the shite buckets. But Battlefield in particular seems to have a high skill ceiling.

Personally I'm not a big fan of the Battlefield series, so I've never put in the time in any of them to develop any sort of muscle memory for the mechanics. But as bad as I am at Battlefield games, I found that I was extra bad at Hardline back when I was playing the beta.

This is why I don't play competitive games online. For every one guy who just wants to play a few casual matches, there are 100 more who play online 15 hours a day 7 days a week. Catching up to them is hopeless.

Hence why I walked from TLOU online. That, and the introduction of literally dozens of weapons to turn it into COD...

Hipfiring instead of trying to aim every time will double your K/D, start there.

ETA:: battlefield is more about scoring points than gettign kills. Spot enemies and take objectives and you will level up twice as fast. Dont be that A hole that runs around on Hotwire trying to shoot people while there are 3 empty vehicles.

This is your first shooter game and you only played 4 times I would expect you to get you arse handed to you. Dont be too discouraged. I've been playing FPS for 20 years and still get destroyed regularly because its not the only thing I play. You may want to try Battlefield 4. There are a lot of roles you can play and vehicles to use that support your team without having to always go toe to toe with other shooters. The new Call of Duty has a casual mode as well. Practice for a while, learn the maps and you will slowly improve.

prepare to get raped by lots of 9 year olds. Played COD for the longest and then tried BF, and COD was much easier. Just takes alot of practice and patience

Hop into an empty server (go through the server browser, not quick match) and try shooting at things like barrels. Go up to the edge of a container and try shooting the different corners...it will kind of get you used to going from target to target.

You can also hop in vehicles and practice moving around in them.

That's how I learned how to fly in BF3. There's nothing more fun than seeing the server lose it's mind because the "noob" keeps crashing the choppers.

I've been trying that since BF3 and I still can't fly that well.

I can stay in the air long enough for someone to actually shoot me down.

I pretty much stopped trying in populated servers. I'll do a jeep or tank, but avoid the air unless I'm a chopper gunner.

It's really fun getting airborne and hearing nothing but beeps 3 seconds in.

Amen. I don't know how pilots do it. I only really get in the air if I can be the gunner. I was a really good gunner in BF3, but I hardly get a chance in BF4. The choppers are always abandoned by snipers doing sipery things or just always being shot down.
