There are lot of little islands in the Santa Rosa sound you can anchor at if you choose, there is also crab island in the bay between Ft. Walton and Destin.

Be careful in the Santa Rosa Sound and pay close attention to channel markers. It gets really shallow in places that seem like they should be deeper.

Also, if you are entering Destin via the Destin pass, pay close attention there as well to the conditions prior to entering the jetties. An outgoing tide coupled with a stiff south** wind will ruin your day. The waves stack up and are large (8-10' at times).

Not as bad as panama, though. I've had friends leave PC and couldn't clear the waves, resulting in the entire cockpit going underwater, in a 55" boat. Basically, the bow couldn't clear the wave and the boat fell backwards down the wave. It's very rare out of Destin.

Maybe...not getting in a peter measuring contest because both can be bad. I have been on a 64 Viking scared to death heading in to Destin pass. Heavy outgoing tide with a 25 mph wind out of the south results in a high pucker factor.

I don't have experience with PCB pass.

Destin Pass

No desire to measure either, just trying to give the OP confidence. It happens, but not a common thing in Destin.

Yea I thought the destin condition, much like any tidal pass, would be worse with an incoming tide and a north wind, or outgoing on a south wind.

When tide and wind disagree here in La it can make even routine bayou mouth passages interesting at times.

Agreed. I've heard horror stories, but watching the weather will make for smooth seas

Yep...I need to correct my original post...when the wind and tide oppose one another it gets bad. Destin pass is pretty narrow at the mouth and can have a lot of water flowing out or in - a lot of current.

I have heard experienced Florida captains compare it (Destin Pass) to the Jupiter inlet and that is saying something.

As to the OP, it is rare that it gets like that though. I mention it only for your situational awareness.

Boat go in and out of it daily by the scores. I mention it only because I felt I should.

Yep, but as a professional captain with tons of experience entering Destin and Jupiter, I've never had a problem when watching the weather/tides.

It was a great post to be aware of that fact, though.

I've done it from Venice to Panama City. Was an easy day trip in a 33 Bertram

Also know of some guys that did it from Grand Isle to Orange Beach in a offshore center console. Fished their way there and hung out on beach for concert and fished home.

Yea that sounds ideal; easy deal in larger boats but seems like the OP (and myself as well) is interested in doing it in a smaller boat. Guess we'd likely be inland already before the Destin pass so shouldn't be an issue. Thanks to those chiming in with experience in the area

I don't go offshore unless it's calm. Big or small boat, it's easily doable.
