Your E charts should tell you.

Sounds like a fun trip. I have always wanted to launch in bayou lafourche in Thibodaux and ride down to grand isle.

Like I said, I make that run several times a year. If you need help, let me know.

In looking at the route on google earth, it looks like you'd be in pretty good shape either on a north or south wind. North wind hug the coast, south wind stay inland of the islands like Cat, Horn, Petit Bois, Dauphin, etc. till you hit Mobile bay then jump in the Intracoastal on east side of Mobile Bay. That run looks very do-able for even a 24 ft boat on right days, no? Just map out your fueling/refuge ports and watch your fuel consumption, I wouldn't have her pinned the whole way burning extra gas
Edit: Recall that the pro redfish tour guys run from Mobile to Venice, LA routinely in bay boats so it can't be too bad. Christopher Columbus not required

Know a guy out of Houma that runs his boat every summer from his camp in Grand Isle to his condo in Perdido

I have made that trip several times in a '29 Sea Ray. It's a long ride but fun. Depending on the waves we refuel at either Dauphin Island, Lulu's, or Perdido Bay (Bear Marina maybe). The ICW can be rough till you get behind Dauphin, then again till you get behind Ft. Morgan. Once you get into the ditch it's smooth sailing. There are lot of little islands in the Santa Rosa sound you can anchor at if you choose, there is also crab island in the bay between Ft. Walton and Destin. I think we ran at about 25 knots and it takes us 6-8 hours. I should be making the trip again on Memorial Day.

Not true. Both north and south wind, can and will kick your arse.

has anyone ever tried making a run from the slidell area to navara beach via boat? not a big blue water worthy boat but something that can be trailer back to La behind a 1/2 or 3/4 ton truck. i figured it would be fairly safe if you stayed <5 miles out or even within sight of land and kept an eye on the weather. i've been talking this over with some buddies for years but that's all its ever been - talk.
i know it could be dangerous once you get east of mississippi due to the lack of places to duck into from the weather. i figured fuel stops could be made along the mississippi coast and dauphin island.
I have done it from Gulfport/Biloxi several times. There are PLENTY of fuel, food and drink stops along the coast. I also recommend the ICW from Mobile Bay to Pensacola, stop by LuLu's, . There are overnight accommodations with docks on Dauphin Island as well as Perdido if you want to lay up spend the night. There are plenty of spots to duck out of the weather behind the barrier islands, just run inside or outside depending on wind direction.
Have a blast

For those who have made the run, how much protection do the islands afford?
I've run from Pass Christian to all over the Biloxi marsh and haven't issues.....on decent conditions with a light S/SE wind. Why wouldn't island-hopping your way to Mobile Bay be similar?

It is similar but a bit different, Pass Christian to the Marsh is really only open water to the west. Running across the sound leaves you a lot more unprotected and the seas can really build up in the passes. It is 100% doable but pay attention to the weather or you will spend your entire trip hiding under a lee shore if you are in a small boat.
I run my 27ft center console to Pensacola every year for the airshow and sometimes to a rental condo or house. It is certainly doable in much smaller boats it would just require closer attention to the weather. There is nothing worse than 3x3's in the MS sound, not necessarily unsafe just really uncomfortable in a small boat for any long distance.
Once you make it to the protected portion of the ICW it is smooth sailing from there on out.

I mostly take the outside route, but the inside can be bad too. Wunderground.com is your friend.

Sorry Tigah D
We are making this sound worse and more dangerous than it actually is, just take the usual precautions before heading offshore and enjoy.

yea I could see the gaps in the islands getting interesting with good swells coming in off the Gulf. Been kicking around trailering the boat to Gulf Shores for years but wonder if half the fun may be taking a day or two under good conditions to bounce over that way along the coast.

You don't shoot the gap. You run in the ICW or go outside

I've done it multiple times in a sailboat. No problems. Some shallow draft considerations in the GIWW to lookout for. I can't believe it would be too shallow for an outboard though.
Also sailed form Galveston Bay to IHNC in NOLA. Very interesting trip. Many obstructions to beware at night.

It is a blast, there are several condo's in gulf shores on the bay side with docks. We throw the bags in the boat and leave the car at home.
We have also stayed at the motel with the dock on Dauphin Island, Gulf Breeze I think was the name, certainly not a fancy place but it has a shower and clean bed and a bar/restaurant or two in walking distance.
Once you hit the ICW there are numerous places to fill the boat as well as your belly. Enjoy

ICWW from Slidell to Ft. Morgan is open sound, just plan accordingly it is certainly doable in that boat.
ICWW from Ft. Morgan onward is a canal or protected water the entire way-no problems.
There is no time you will be more than a 15 mile run from protected water, just watch the weather. As you cruise by the barrier islands you will see many boats similar to yours.
