There is no longer any such thing as a student athlete, so why pretend?

I'll get flamed, but I don't care.
The AAU-ization of college basketball is complete. It has always been a farm system for the NBA, but the one-and-done rule has accelerated the death of the college game. Kudos to a sleazeball like Calipari for figuring out how to use it to his advantage and win. His redneck white fan base has the best collection of young black mercenaries in the land. These people didn't want black kids on their team 50 years ago.
But I have a bigger problem with the crop of kids the system is turning out. They have no interest in a college education. None. Marginal NBA players like Jordan Mickey (whom I love as an LSU player) have no desire to be in college. It's all about the dollars, even if it means playing for 200k in some shithole in Latvia.
And we as fans of all sports wring our hands over recruiting classes filled with dolts like Travonte Valentine who can't pass the simplest of academic curricula. We put these kids on pedestals they don't deserve and can't handle. We are to blame just as much as the kids' teachers and dysfunctional families.
There have always have been crappy students playing college athletics (remember Dwayne Scales?), but it's time we did away with any requirement of college attendance and let these wannabe LeBrons go chase their dreams. 95% will fail and end up on the street, and that is their choice.
Goodbye Jarell and Jordan. I hope all your dreams come true.

Everyone goes to college to make more money. Stop being such a blind idiot.

Way to take a non racial situation and attempt to make it racial.
And secondly, have you ever made 1 million dollars? I went to school and had a class with Elfrid Payton last year. Elfrid left for the NBA and is making 2.5 million today while I'm still in classes doing bull crap assignments. How could I begrudge him for leaving?

But these guys don't need college to make that money. They're not really going to college. They're attending classes that have nothing to do with their chosen profession.

I do agree with you that the 1 year rule is retarded
but these kids could also go play in Europe if they wanted to make money that 1 year

You do realize that they can still finish college while making their millions and pursuing their lifelong dreams. Can many of us say the same things, didn't think so

Do you know how many people just go to college to get a degree? What about lawyer who get an undergrad in history or something before going to law school?
I will be the first one to say I think the 1ndone rule hurts college basketball, but to act like athletes are the only people who leave school early for work is naive and ridiculous.

First off, blame the system, not the kids. They are only doing what the adults who make the rules allow. Secondly, you decry the "one and done," yet want to do away with the college requirement altogether?
Finally, if you were in their shoes, and the prospect of even just 200k was being dangled in front of you as a 20 year old, wtf would you do?

What's not measurable:
How many basketball athletes who start their freshman year thinking "one and done" end up finishing or at least getting 3 years? Who's to say that getting these kids in college doesn't have good long-lasting effects?

So what about the guys that played college basketball from the 1940s-2000? How did those guys find a way to attend class? How did those guys find a way to pass Biology? Until the turn of the century, you had 99% of college players that stayed at least through their junior years.
What happened? And why is the NBA so stupid to draft "projects" who usually don't pan out until they are with their second team anyway?

I am like most people. Let them go pro right out of high school if that is what they want to do. Let the NBA deal with the bad draft picks and the head cases. Let the players blow through what money they get before they are 30, and let them come wash my car, or cut my grass when they are run out of the league and broke. They can also dig my ditch.... Or hold the "slow" sign in the road when doing road contruction.
