Is the inclusion of exclamation points in a casual email/text conversation pretty much mandatory now? I realize women do this constantly, but now I see men include the "Ok!" "Thanks!" in texts and even in business emails too.

It's gotten to a point where if you don't use them, you seem like an a-hole.

What's the OT's take on this? I'll close with an onion article that made me think of this...

quote:

BETHESDA, MD—In a diabolical omission of the utmost cruelty, stone-hearted ice witch Leslie Schiller sent her friend a callous thank-you email devoid of even a single exclamation point, sources confirmed Monday. “Hey, I had a great time last night,” wrote the cold-blooded crone, invoking the chill of a thousand winters with her sparely punctuated missive—a message as empty of human warmth as the withered hag’s own frozen soul. “Nice to get together. We should do it again sometime.” In a final flourish of ruthless savagery, sources reported that the barbaric gorgon concluded the email with a conspicuously single “xo.”

There's almost never a time they actually need to be used.

I hate seeing them!

Scruffy only uses them when he wants to exclaim something.

I don't mind it where it fits, but I know some computer-retarded people who use them incorrectly and it kills me.

When you're sending an e-mail blast to the whole company about someone who passed away, it should be common sense not to end every sentence with "!!!!!!"
And yet, I've seen it done.

I have stated for years that there is a market for a sarcasm font. Maybe an excited font should be created too.

I do in emails. If your speaking with someone, you need to match tone. If your emailing girls with bubbly personalities, you'd come across bad if you don't.

I don't like exclamation points because I feel like it's yelling. But women love them some exclamation points, so I'll throw them in occasionally if I'm texting one.

I'll put exclamations in an email every now and then. I refuse to use "lol", "lmao", or smilies in emails and texts and I hate when other people use them.

I use them to match tone between coworkers and when requesting stuff from clients. The latter is used interchangeably as a way to permeate enthusiasm and ironically when asking for a lot of info or, say on request #3 for the same info.

I use them sometimes if the Email is to a woman. Never if the Email is to a guy.
