Wow! Refresh my memory -- why did UCLA fire him? Did it have to do with that big Sports Illustrated story about how one of the players was a crazy thug?

i think that had a lot to do with it, but the program was on a downward spiral as well. he started out red hot with 3 straight final fours. i think howland lost control of his players at some point, with the biggest problem that white thug dude that beat up teammates.

I'm really surprised someone with Howland's record took the gig at a lower-tier SEC school.

He should have done better, unless what happened at UCLA blackballed him completely with upper tier basketball schools.

Mizzou skipped over Howland to hire a DII coach from Central Missouri State University, and Howland wanted the Mizzou job!

Yeah, Mississippi State made a home run hire.

He inherited a boatload of talent at UCLA but the players he brought in undermined the entire program. Solid hire, great X and O coach that may thrive at a program like MSU. Hopefully he's changed his style with the time off because I think he drove players in a similar fashion as Gillespie.

at recruiting. Can't get over UCLA not winning the championship with Darren Collison, Westbrook, Love, and Mbah a Moute.

As an LSU fan, I don't want to see that guy coaching a division rival. In fact the whole SEC west is all of a sudden looking pretty strong for basketball.

Howland also realized how dooshy the AAU coaches are in Cali. AAU coaches are the worst.

This is a HUGE hire by Miss st. I'm shocked he didn't wait and see what else comes available after the coaching shuffle after final 4.

He's not that impressive without elite talent.

He also totally rebuilt Pitt after he came into a bad situation, just like he did at UCLA
