recommendations for day or overnight trip from NYC

I'm going to NYC with my wife from april 2-8, we have both been multiple times and are looking into a day or overnight excursion for something new. The general options are upstate to a small village on the hudson, the hamptons, or somewhere in connecticut. we won't have a car, so travel by bus or train is a must, and i don't want something with more than a 2 hour or so trip each way( i know hamptons is closer to 3 hours). Keep in mind we are going in less than 2 weeks and many things will be limited by weather.
