So I'm escorting my cousin to her senior prom this weekend. Before y'all pass judgment, she's autistic so she's not very sociable and doesn't have many friends. My aunt was adamant about both her and her brother (both seniors) going even though she didn't want to go. The only way she would agree to go is if I went with her so I volunteered to go and play bodyguard and make sure nobody messes with her and that she has a good time.

Anyways, my question to the OT is would you force your child to their senior prom if they didn't want to go?

No

However, I might encourage them to depending on the situation.

Depends on the situation. In the one like you describe above, I think the parent acted correctly. The girl probably didn't want to go for fear of being picked on or being alone. This way, she can go make a memory without fear.

Hell yes, only if they post party at our house as well.

That's what I love about high school girls. I keep getting older and they just stay the same age.

There's so much fricked up in this story.

How old are you?

Did your cousin not want to go?

Is her mom a bitch or doing the right thing?

Are you referring to a Klan pamphlet as an "article"?

First of all...congrats on being the best uncle in the world....secondly...I question a parent making a kid go to something like this if they don't want to. Especially given her challenges with autism.

My advice now is make it fun for her. whatever she enjoys just run with it and make her smile.
