There's been a lot of talk this March Madness season about the NCAA's refusal to pay college athletes. On "Real Time with Bill Maher" on Friday night, the host weighed in on the controversy during a conversation with his panel guest and NBC broadcaster Bob Costas.

"I think they should be paid a stipend," Costas said. "But if you pay them a salary, you're basically waving the white flag and saying this is a complete sham. That's all it is. Which they've allowed it to become." "But it is a complete sham," said Maher. Last week, comedian John Oliver also commented on the situation, criticizing the "billion-dollar sports enterprise where the athletes are not paid a penny."

"Now before you get too shocked," Oliver said. "Remember that America has a long, proud history of paying aging white men unconscionable amounts of money for screaming at people."

I can't stand watching his show either.

That one British (?) guy's show late night is great though and still gets the message across.

I get that it's fricked up how the NCAA is making shite tons of money off of free labor, but it's the athlete's choice. If they really have a problem with starving, quit playing and go get a job.

that's the joke to me, show me a division 1 athlete that is "starving" and I'll show you what I did in college.

I can't tell you how many times I've wondered what Bill Maher's opinion of College Sports is.

The NCAA is hilariously terrible. Carmelo Anthony should have been a millionaire before he hit the NBA. Anyone who spouts off about capitalism being the one true God should side with the players.

Seriously the schools that rake in shite loads of money provide these athletes with every thing they need. Weight training, nutritionists, tutors, housing, etc.

So you think every athlete should get paid, or just the good ones?

That's a fair question. If you are more productive at your job, and make more money for the company than the guy next to you, would you want to be paid more?

So what about women's sports?

Take LSU for example, should the women's basketball program get a full 12 scholarships while the baseball team only can use 11.7 despite bringing in a shite ton more money?

I love it when people bring up this argument. Because the slaves had the option to say, "Nah, frick picking cotton, I'm going to go work for money," right?

I think the NCAA could probably subsidize all college athletes with a flat dollar amount across the board no matter the sport they play.

I'd say that about 500-1k/mo would be sufficient and on par with what college kids that have jobs would be making waiting tables part time or something.

Not many colleges can afford to pay the women's volleyball team 1K/month.

The only reasons why the players haven't and won't get paid are quite simple:

Power, control and greed. If Bama plays it pays his players...how much do you think saban will really make now? I think coaches would be the first in line for a paycut.

The minute you pay the players, you will then see players starting to level out the player field.

What happens if boosters start deciding that they don't want to support the salaries of shitty players?
