Cancun Lodging Help Please

Looking to take advantage of the direct flight from New Orleans to Cancun for a weekend trip (early May). Really can't beat the price and idea that in 1:45 minutes you'd have the white sands and blue water that close. Primarily looking for a resort with nice beach, and in the hotel zone. Not sure that the all-inclusive option is necessary, but would consider it. Really just looking to hang out on the beach for a few days.
I realize there are literally a hundred or so options, but the OT travel experts typically provide good advice and recommendations.
TIA

I would check out both of the Excellence's either Riviera Cancun or Playa Mujeres

Hotel Zone? Marriott Casamagma was nice. No complaints here Three restaurants on site and all were fine. Japanese restaurant, restaurant like Chammps and the dining room.

Head south for Playa. Cancun is a tourist trap like crazy. There are tons of all-inclusive resorts down there, so I would check out pricing for those and reviews.

Is Playa worth the travel from the airport just for a couple of days? Flying in on a Thursday and leaving on Sunday.

Playa del Carmen is only a half hour drive away. Yes, it's worth the trip. Nice little resort town with a beautiful beach.

Yep. Stayed there last summer. It's connected to the JW Marriott as well so you can use those restaurants too and bill straight to your room. You aren't supposed to use the JW's pool...which is much nicer, but no one stopped us when we did.

All inclusive sucks, ritz Carlton, JW Marriott or either if the two Westina only way to go

I dont think you can do a weekend with the direct flight.
I think flights are only on like Sat.
I booked a trip the other week for a Wed and return on Sun.
That flight wouldnt work

More like hour and half with mexican traffic/drivers. I wouldnt burn 3 hours on driving down there. I go to playa/tulum once a year.

This - and I'm 99% all those resorts have shuttle buses to and from the airport. If not, a cab ride is only like $50 or so.
ETA: It's around an hour really. But I would definitely do this over Cancun. Playa >> Cancun in my opinion.
If you do choose Cancun, I would make a day trip to Isla Mujeres. I spent about 5 days there and was incredible. Their town square is really awesome.

already booked.....Thursday afternoon departure and return on Sunday at noon. I may consider Playa....since we are just looking for beach time and not so much the shopping and nightlife that Cancun offers

You can get a private round trip transfer to Plays for ~$100 on Canadian Transfers. Playa is a great town. Check out AirBnB Playa for plenty of cheap rentals. Tons of good food in Playa and a great walking town. You can rent 2 beach chairs for the day for $20 with bathrooms and food and drink service...

We drove there in a monsoon from the hotel district and it was an hour tops each way with several policia "speed bumps" along the way to slow traffic down.

We made the trip in 50 minutes in January.

Yeah, it's not a bad drive although my car rental experience in Mexico was a nightmare. Never ever again will I do that.

We rented and drove 5 hours south, but that was the only way to get there. I would not rent to drive around the Riviera...

Never had an issue with renting down there. I usually get a jeep for the times im down there. As for the drive down, maybe im just a pussy and drive slow But it takes me an hour, at best, to get to playa resorts.
