Off the top of my head a 1st round struggle is usually a bad sign.

Georgetown against Princeton in '89 was a close call but like the others you listed, Gtown didn't win it all.

I think UConn beat a 16 by like 2 and made it to the Final Four (lost to Mich St.)

Syracuse didn't win it all but I will never forget how the officials bailed them out against UNC-Asheville

And LSU's Keith Hornsby was on that team.

Closest point spreads in the last few decades were:

15 pts twice.

2002 Maryland vs Siena

1994 Arkansas vs NC A&T

Both instances the eventual National Champs led by double digits at half and the whole 2nd half.

I'm trying to remember and I'm not sure.

I know Kentucky only beat Princeton by 2 when they went to the Final Four in 2011.

Also looks like UK 2012 by that same 15 pt margin:

Here are the margins by 1 seed champs since 1990:

UNLV by 30,
Duke by 26,
UNC by 20,
Arkansas by 15,
Kentucky by 36,
UCLA by 38
Uconn by 25,
Mich St by 27
Duke by 38
Maryland by 15
UNC by 28
Florida by 43
Kansas by 24
UNC by 43
Duke by 29
Kentucky by 15

I think first four round doesn't help those teams when they face 1 seed

I remember the Illini team that got to the finals struggling. That was one of the best teams of the 2000s

Actually the only time a 1 seed has won the title since they implemented the first four was UK in 2012.

They played WKU in the first round, who had to come from 16 down in the last 4 minutes to beat Miss Valley State. They have the smallest margin of victory of any eventual champ.

That same year Vermont won their first four game and kept their margin within 20.

Albany kept it within 15 last year..and the rest have been by the normal 25-30 margin minus Cal Poly losing by 37 to WSU.

I imagine that 37 pt margin could be under threat tonight in the UK/Hampton game.

avg. margin of victory in 1v16 games by 1 seed eventual champs since 1990 is 28.3 pts

avg margin of victory of 1 seeds in 1v16 games after the 16 played in the first four game is 23.4 pts.
