Houston-area State Legislator trying to kill craft breweries

So it was offensive to see that a Houston legislator named Senfronia Thompson filed a bill that appears aimed at killing off these businesses and forcing you to drink like me, in the hazy discontent of watery, flavorless beer that must be consumed so cold it can’t be tasted.

I give Thompson’s bill low odds at best. She is a Democrat for one. This is obviously an anti-business bill, two. And an assault on decent beer may be the one thing that wakes up the massive, slumbering hipster vote that surely the Tea Party dreads.
But let’s put a stake in it now before the threat grows or some weird alliance of strange bedfellows gives this thing life.
Here is what the bill would do. It would limit direct distribution from a brewery from an already low 40,000 barrels to 5,000 barrels.

So now is the time to stand up, to say no and to demolish this bill. Then let’s lift one.

Political payback for campaign contribution
Her district has no skin in the craft beer game
Looked it up, and her district is 89.2% B/H

This is a sop to the great middleman of the beer business, the distributor. Distributors tend to be local deep pockets who protect their niches vigorously. I put them in the same category as car dealers.
I put them in the category of part of an antiquated system that should be revised to take away their monopolistic stranglehold on the market and our choices as consumers.
If our legislators really believed in freedom and free enterprise, they would cut out the mandatory nature of these middlemen-distributors who pay the lawmakers a fortune to keep ancient laws in place to protect their kingdom.
Manufacturers/brewers should be able to sell directly to retailers and customers if they want, and retailers should not be forced to accept whatever shitty offerings their area distributors decide they can have.
If a local store hears about an awesome beer being made in Oregon that it wants to sell, it should be able to call that brewery and order a few cases. But no can do. The store can only get what the distributor allows. And you can bet the distributor is cozy with the BMC folks, who would really prefer to keep a lid on competition.
The distributors can stay, because they serve a purpose, but their mandatory nature should be abolished. Let them compete in the free market.

, Thompson has received a total of $34,000 from the Beer Alliance of Texas since 2002, and since 1998, she's received a total of $20,050 from a lobbying group called Licensed Beverage Distributors. She's also received $15,670 during that same timeframe from Wholesale Beer Distributors of Texas, whose raison d'etre is self-evident. These contributions constitute three of her largest supporters to date, and the list goes on.
Shocker
