What is the main cause of the 1 and done's and the mass exodus to the NBA?

In your opinion....
To me it all started with the Kevin Garnett and Kobe Bryants era's. I know players went straight to the pro's from high school before, but those two seem to be at the forefront of the current mass exodus of players who skipped college all together, and now have to wait one year, and fall into the current 1 and done era. Do you think it's the money? Or is it something else. Because you'd think that its all about money? I am not into economics or anything, but I would imagine that the contracts in the NBA were normal compared to the market as they are nowadays right? Someone correct me if I am wrong.

It is about getting to the 2nd contract at an earlier age. Same thing that has happen in the NFL with the new CBA, they want to be done with that rookie contract.

Some if these players don't care about the university. They would rather cash in instead of earning a degree and developing their skills.
Calipari has his system in place. It's working for Kentucky.

99.9% of college students would do the same if presented the option.

But even though I love my school...if I was offered millions to leave while I was in college I would have done it and not thought twice

A lot of people say that they would develop more as a basketball player sitting on a NBA bench than being a stater for a major university.

because in basketball it's physically possible for them to be elite right away. (Lebron, Kobe, Garnett for example)
I guess it's possible in football too but you usually need several years of physical development especially for linemen, linebackers, etc

You serious? People started realizing that they could make more money.
NBA players often get near their peak early on.

The NBA has a salary scale for draft picks. If you're the first pick, you get x dollars, second pick gets a little less, third a little less than that.
Once your rookie contract is up, you can sign that max deal for the big bucks and choose where you want to play. Why not get the years of servitude over with as quickly as possible? I actually think the one and done works better than when all those guys were jumping into the league without playing any college ball. You had some bad situations, like Leon Smith, Darius Miles, Kwame Brown, Robert Swift -- dudes who would have been a million times better off playing at Kentucky, Kansas or North Carolina for a year. At least that might have prepared them a little bit for life.

2 words -- Kwame Brown.
Get the millions when you can. Kwame Brown would have been exposed as a college player and he would never have gotten paid.
