He is white. He won a lot. He's good looking. He loved to trash talk. He never backed down from physical play and he would do anything to get an edge over his opponents. Until he was an NBA veteran, he treated his teammates with disdain. He loved fricking with student sections (see his responses to being called gay versus a guy like Redick, who hated being a villain).
I get why he's hated. Redick, Hansbrough, Morrison. None of those guys could ever take the hated white player mantle away from Laettner. And which ever white player that comes along with his combo of talent and attitude will be a one and done anyway so there will likely never be another Laettner.

Not a good enough player and for being fairly limited, he loved to party way too much. But he loved being hated more than anyone. However, he always came off more like a cartoonish pro wrestling heel.

In all seriousness, and I'm too young to say this for sure, but I'm pretty positive Christian laettner basically kick started the hate for duke thing

I see. I can respect his game. But I can see how his arrogance could rub some people the wrong way. He's definitely a polarizing individual.
