Why is fouling under 5 seconds up three not the go to move?

I'm not talking about just our game but you see it all the time teams don't foul. I don't understand it. You almost never lose doing this but giving up the three happens a lot.

It's basically been universally accepted as the thing to do. I'm sure it's happened before but I can't think of a time a team lost fouling up 3 correctly. (Very late.. Not much time left)

The Spurs lost earlier this season but they fouled with way too much time left.

Teams lose all the time when they let the other team get off the 3 and send it to overtime.

Yep. Just so much has to go right for the team to get three points if it's done right.

the thought process is that it brings losing the game in regulation into the equation via a 4 point play or an and-1 and a rebounded missed free throw

whereas if you let the possession play out the worst that can happen is the game gets tied and you go to OT

Missing the second ft and putting the rebound back in doesn't seem all that difficult. Plus you risk the shooter antipitating the foul and chucking a 3.

I don't think it is as cut and dry as most make it out

Honestly, after fouling at least twice behind the 3-point line In the last 10 minutes, giving Auburn 3 free throws, I wouldn't trust our guys to foul on the floor and not in the act of shooting. They are basketball dumb enough to have either given 3 free throw to tie instead of making a 3, or even giving up a 4 point play. Most teams, I think you definitely foul. I'm not sure our guys are smart enough(basketball-wise) to do it correctly, though.

Oh well, it's over with.

It's not. You go from worst case scenario being overtime to losing if a 4 point play happens or a missed ft and putback.

The why does it never happen?

LSU should have fouled Bowers when he touched it. It's hardly debatable.

I think coaches fear a player will foul during the shot. Given the basketball IQ of this team, I can understand that fear.

But I'm fouling in that situation.

Very, very low percentage on pulling that off.

I would like to see someone (not here) do a statistical study on this. Until it is done this isn't obvious.

It really isn't all that hard to get a put back on an intentional missed basket. And with 5.9 seconds you might get more than one attempt

Bottom line time out discussion: "If Bowers gets the ball, foul him". We didn't even blink when he got the ball so I'm assuming that discussion never happened. And that's a shame.

Bowers could have been fouled with 3.5 seconds left. He was standing there waiting to hand the ball off. It was clear he wasn't going to shoot.

The right thing to do would be to put a FT shooter on the line that will struggle to make that first free throw.

Next, and equally important, is to make them catch the ball going away from the basket and not in shooting range.

LSU managed to have a perfect case scenario play out, and they didn't take advantage of it. They got a very poor ft shooter, catching a pass near half court. A foul right there and we may be talking about LSU upsetting Kentucky today.

What was also as equally a bone headed move was not getting a shot off right before that with 6 on the shot clock after a time out. We get that shot off and it either:

A- goes in.. And it's ball game
B- miss and get an offensive rebound
C- miss and AU gets the rebound, but the clock is not stopping. They are forced to take a time out on the other end of the court and can't set up as good of a play
D- Dont catch iron on the shot, but more time is still run off the clock in the process.

We likely win with scenario a, b and c. And still have a great shot at winning with D.

Instead... We get no shot off and give au the ball in a great position with the ability to set up a good play.

Oh it is the right move, just our coaches are pitiful and don't teach our players anything.
