Truck is an 06 with 163K miles, trans just went out. I've owned it since 09, planned to drive it indefinitely. Cared well for it, all synthetic, planned maintenance, etc. That said with this mileage, trade in is only $8k without trans issue. Trans repair is $4,500. If I want to get rid of it, how do I do it? Sell it, or will the dealer give me anything on trade?

what brand and model truck do you have? a repair of 4,500 sounds high. You could buy a used one and have someone install it for less....

if you plan to keep the truck until something more major goes wrong, i'd have it repaired. Call AAMCO or one of the other big transmission repair places in your local area. Was the quote you received from the dealership? If so, you can expect a rebuild for probably half that. Also, check with autozone. They used to be able to get rebuilt transmissions. If you go that route, buy it through them and have a smaller shop swap it out for you.

I agree that you need to call some of the local transmission shops or local mechanics.

Maybe get one from a salvage yard and have a local mechanic install it for you.

You need to call around or you have more than transmission problems. You should be able to find a rebuilt for less than half of that - did you go to a dealership...
