I'm now on a platforming kick after playing rayman legends. now currently debating picking up DK tropical freeze and might also get Ori and the blind Forrest which just released.
Got me curious to see which games you guys think are the best in this genre

Never played Cool Spot for the SNES, but it was awesome for the Genesis.

Super Metroid
Metroid Fusion
More exploration/adventure involved than a standard platformer, but really, really good games.

Go ahead and do yourself a favor and get Ori. I've only played an hour of it but it's an awesome looking game and the controls feel tight. I think it'll live up to the hype and it's only $20.
Also, you should play Guacamelee and Max: The Curse of Brotherhood if you haven't played those. Both are awesome games.

quote:Guacamelee is great, but he should be aware that it has fairly deep combat system (for the type of game it is). That might be a turn off if he's mostly looking for gameplay centered around navigating a 2D environment.

Yeah I agree Guacamelee is more combat-focused than traversing platforms. If that's what you're into, then Max is definitely worth playing. It has very little combat (it's a stretch to even call it that).
I think Ori is going to be a mixture of both... good puzzle-platform mechanics but also has combat.

Two very different suggestions, but Child of Light and Valkyrie Profile. Dig the RPG aspects a lot.
