Producer can mean literally anything, including, "we don't want to pay you, so we'll give you a producer credit."

Steven Spielberg also produced the Tobe Hooper directed movie "Poltergeist" even though movie insiders claim Spielberg took control of direction due to being an absolute control freak. No wonder the movie looks and sounds like a Spielberg movie - it is a Spielberg movie.

Perhaps the Kurtz movies have a Kurtz style because he became a "Spielberg" onset and inserted himself too much into the direction process.

If you watch successful sitcoms they generally have three times as many producers during the latter years then when the show began. I always figured it was a way of funneling money into the pockets of people the show's creator wanted to reward

. I thought the producer was the guy who handled the budget as an extension of the director who is busy with a lot of other things.
I'm pretty sure that is the Unit Production Manager.

If I'm wrong I'm sure someone will pipe in here soon and correct me.

A real producer is closely involved in every aspect of the film from idea all the way through marketing. They are the king of the set and in most cases the director's boss.

The best analogy I heard one time was comparing a movie to a football team and equated the producer to the GM, director to the Head Coach, and the actors to the players.

Well not "too much"

Jedi wasn't very good and it's probably because Kurtz wasn't there

And the two post Star Wars films I mentioned are fricking good and that's in large part to the visual style

so then he goes to produce "the dark crystal" and while I'm unsure of his roles as producer here, the visual style of the movie is very familiar to fans of "the empire strikes back", same goes for the next movie he produced "return to oz"

Research who the director of photography was. That really plays into visual style, in some cases even more than direction.

My understanding is that the producer is the General Manager, in NFL terms, while the director is the head coach. The producer gets the oscar if the film wins Best Movie.

And the director's guild was notoriously picky about allowing "co-director" credits until very recently - recognizing things like the Coen Brothers traditional partnership.

So, the Speilberg/Lucas team - that would be another example.

Now, having said that - "Executive Producer" does, sort of, imply the money - either putting it up, watching the big ticket budget items, managing the money for the money folks, etc. Not always, but most commonly.

Plain "producer" credit, as you suggest can mean literally anything they want it to mean. Somewhat commonly, it is the detail guy/gal who handles a lot of the day-to-day coordination so the director can focus on shooting the film.

And, for example, another picky guild, the writer's guild - if you don't write enough of the script to get a writing credit, but you didn't draft the original story, either, they drop you down to a "producer" credit, as well.

Producer and especially executive producer are vague terms. Vince McMahon is credited as an executive producer on The Scorpion King simply because he owns the name "The Rock" and they wanted to promote the movie as starring Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson. McMahon himself had nothing to do with the production of the movie.
