Which credit card to get: Platinum Amex or Visa Black Card?

Looking to get a credit card with high rewards for the wife and I to share. Will use for all bills and other expenses. The card will have very high use each month. Would use when we travel. Would love to get in some of those VIP lounges I see in airports all the time.
Platinum Card American Express
Amex
Visa Black Card
Black Card
Of the two which one would you choose?

Curious how much you plan to spend each month? VIP lounges aren't that sweet of a deal.
I have my work(green)and personal(gold) Amex cards linked and spend in the 13-15k range each month. I don't know if that spend is worth a platinum yearly fee, but I haven't done the math.

Leaning towards the Amex but why do you say this?

I'm not sure yet. I hope we don't spend 13-15k a month. Getting married and this will be our card that we will share, (2 cards on one account). Pay if off each month. Easy way to keep up with who is spending what. If I had to guess I would say 3-10k a month is what we will average. Depends on how much we travel and what upgrades we have planned for the house.
I have a friend who is a doctor and so is his wife. They use the Platinum Amex and he says it pays for itself easily every year. Was telling me about all the free upgrades at hotels and resorts he was getting. The points add up quickly. He recommended my new wife and I get the Platinum Amex but I wanted to explore other options before deciding.

The Amex for sure. I got the Amex green card when I was 19 and have been moving up the card totem pole with them ever since. Their customer service never fails to impress, I've never had a charge declined, and never had problems using the card abroad.
I can't think of a negative experience I've had with Amex.

It depends on what you value: If rewards = points/miles then the Amex premier rewards gold would be a better option. The platinum is way better for vip upgrades but the rewards program isn't good (1x for everything). Also you have to factor in that getting a 2nd platinum adds $175/year, whereas the gold can add cards for free.
With the loss of Costco amex is doing some upgrades to their cards; the gold will soon add $100 air voucher per year (the platinum is $200), and will have 2x points at restaurants. Right now it gets 3x on airlines, 2x on gas and groceries.
Like I said: it all depends on what you value. If you travel a lot the hotel, rental car, and other upgrades would be the way to go. But $625/year is pretty steep. Besides, airports are doing a lot better job catering to snobs (like me). I'd rather hang out at One Flew South than the Centurion Lounge at ATL.

I've never seen a good argument in favor of the black visa.
FWIW Skyclub is great - it makes getting delayed / layovers much more bearable

Sapphire Preferred not an option?
If I remember right, Platinum has a $450 annual fee. I seriously doubt you'd earn that much more with the Amex to offset $325 difference in fees

Amex Gold is the answer, in my opinion. While it may be cool to show off a platinum Amex, it just doesn't work for the spending the OP is estimating.

If you are going to be spending a lot of money on a card, I wouldn't do it on the platinum amex. The platinum amex is good to have for the benefits but I would put the majority of my spend on another card. So to answer your question, I might look at getting both the amex gold and platinum in your case.

Do I get benefits if my company card is an Amex platinum?

Would the experts on here not consider the Barclays World Arrival + an appropriate card for the OP? 2x the points on all spending seems to me to be the best value, but I'm no expert like others here.

You really should look at the Chase Sapphire Preferred and the Amex Blue Cash Preferred. I have both and maximize points (CSP which transfer to United and SW) and Cash (AMBCP which gives you 3% on gas and 6% on groceries)

Thanks for the advice guys.
We just went with the Platinum Amex. We have a couple of big trips planned already and will add several Vegas trips this year too. We will try this one out for a year and see if we like it. Can always change it later.

Unless you really get your money's worth out of the benefits of the aforementioned cards, I feel like the Freedom, CSP (downgraded to CS after one year), and Chase Ink Plus is a hard combo to beat.
