Synology NAS question

I know next to nothing about these. Is the DSM an OS that can be run simply be attaching a monitor to the hardware, or is it a program that needs to be installed on a server/desktop connected to the hardware?

It runs on the NAS which is hardwired to your network. You interface with it through the network either using a web browser on a separate computer or an app with your smart phone.

So no software to install on a computer, but you have to install an app for a mobile device.

So I assume any computer connected to the network can access the DSM (assuming you have the login info). Assuming this to be true, I could plug an external hard drive into any computer on the network to pull info off the NAS for archiving purposes, correct?

Correct. If you set it up correctly, you can access it from anywhere. I have the drive mapped on my PCs so I can access it like any other folder instead of through the browser.
