About 15 people from work went to lunch today at a Mexican restaurant. Waitress was generally absent, everyone had to ask for refills(chips/salsa and drinks) multiple times before receiving them, had to ask multiple times for silverware, some orders were incomplete, 1st persons meal came out 1 hour after ordering and the last one 1.5 hours. The waitress said she screwed some things up and apologized several times. The manager came out and comped the whole table it was so bad. So a few people feel bad for her and ask if the bill is coming out of her check, she said no, she had a bad day and was sorry for screwing everything up. Anyway, the people at the table buck up about a $75 tip feeling sorry for her and her bad day. I felt bad for the girl but wouldn't tip and a few co-workers gave me the stink eye.

PS: no one complained to management or was in any way rude or disruptive and I'm usually a 30-50% tipper.

I always tip.

Because I don't want to be that loser who doesn't tip a employee that makes their living on tips.

If they comped it, I'd leave a normal tip. If they didn't, I'd leave a 10% tip. They have to be pretty darn bad to receive 0% since I used to be a waiter myself.

The fact the waitress apologized and the manager did the right thing then yes tipping may be in order. I would have had to be there to give a definitive answer.

depends, was her section full and she was running around like a crazy lady? if so then i would tip and guess that it was just a bad day. i've only not tipped once and it was because myself and two buddies were at a pizza joint and were the only table. the waitress ignored us for most of the time and we only ordered appetizers. the apps came out an hour later. even the bartenders slacked on giving us beer.

75$ tip? Holy shite. Any idea on how much the bill would have been?

You have to be an absolutely terrible server to get less than 20% from me. From your account that would have been one of those times.

And yeah even in your case I would have left a couple bucks. I'll never leave straight up zero considering I know what servers deal with for what they get paid.

Sounds like more was going wrong than just the server. No way she places an order and it's her fault it takes an hour or more, wrong order or not. You give her at least a minimal tip, and don't go back.

If my meal is ever comped I usually tip most of what the meal would have cost.

You got a free lunch, are you that poor you can't throw in $5? Everybody has a bad day once in a while, maybe she was new. She was apologizing so she knows she messed up. I'd feel terrible stiffing somebody if they seemed they were working hard and doing their best.

1.5 hour lunch at a Mexican joint because service is so bad equals like a 10% tip from me.

In my opinion, the server is the least of that restaurant's concerns. It sounds like a terrible restaurant. I would never go back.

I always tip . Even if the server sucks I still leave 10%. I will never not leave a tip. That's just me though. To each their own.

Your coworkers were rightfully so to look at you like a dick. Didn't you just eat for free?

I don't believe in welfare so when a waitress doesn't do their job at all then that equals no tip.

I've only no-tipped once and I explained why to that shitty waitress.

My policy is tip % drops with lack of service while never complaining. I don't want my food or drinks spit on or in.

I thought the same thing. We asked and she said she screwed up a bunch of stuff. All the other tables were getting their orders way ahead of ours and no one was sending anything back.

Unless she was rude and ugly, I'd tip. Especially if my meal was comped.

I did. I also had to take an extra hour for lunch, had to put out a bunch of fires when I got back in and now need to work a couple hours this weekend to catch back up. The company lost an hour's worth of work for 15 people.
