Getting dinged at work. Should I make my case, or say "sorry, I'll try harder".

I have a meeting with my manager tomorrow about some errors in my work. I hate to make excuses because no matter what the error still happened. There may be reasons that made the errors more likely to happen, but they still happened. Do I present those excuses, or just say, I'm sorry I'll try harder. Some of these reasons were environmental stress, some of the reasons were because I was focused on helping my coworkers finish their job.

I think I will just briefly describe the situations, not defensively but in a sympathetic way so that he understands why it happend and not that it was just because of blatant disregard. Appreciate any advice.

Just be honest about the reasons. If he's a good manager that will be appreciated more than some sort of defensive stance or excuse (though it may not seem so at the time).

It would be best to explain what you are doing to ensure it does not happen again

Do both. Tell him you will work harder, show him how you are going to make sure it doesn't happen again/why it happened in the first place. Show the initiative there, and you'll be fine.

Yes, Great! I Will definitely have a plan of what I'm going to do so it doesn't happen again. Thanks

Just admit that you know you were wrong, and ask for advice or guidance on what you can do to get better. Any reasonable manager will love that response....rather than trying to justify errors.

Neither. Your manager is saying the work quality is unacceptable. Don't say "I'll try harder", figure out concrete steps to take to fix the situation and spell them out.

For example, those steps might very well include spending less time helping coworkers etc. by the way. That may be okay provided you identify the tradeoffs and let your manager know ahead of time.

Tell him you fricked up
Tell him the reasons why
Tell him what you will do to mitigate this in the future
Tell him you are taking this as a learning oppurtunity to grow as a professional
