Moved to Texas two years ago, HS Soph son and freshman daughter

Both kids are life long LSU fans, wife is from BTR, I went to LSU

Both kids want to go to LSU, no idea how we will pay for it

Few things we have going for us, kids are honor students in Katy ISD, family owns a house in BTR so living expenses will be cheap

Plan on sending them to BRCC or SELA for a year or two, set up the house with their name on a "lease," set up utilities in their name, have each get jobs, register to vote, file a LA tax return and apply for LA citizenship after 2 years there in BTR

pray for us

Anyone remember when all of the Houston Chronicle newspaper boxes started showing up at and around LSU?

Story at the time was that son_or_daughter of the Chron publisher was attending LSU. Probably crap, but it was a fun rumor to spread around.

And for you kids, a "newspaper" was this cellulose-fiber based thing that...

...oh nevermind.

Acceptance rates are far, far higher at LSU, though

I wouldn't look too much into a university's acceptance rate. They can easily be manipulated & don't show the quality of education an institutions provides.

For example, compare these acceptance rates:

The Ohio State 55%
ULL 59%
Georgia 54.7%
Georgia State 53%

Give them some time. You really should take them to look at UT-A, UH, A&M, etc. They might think differently. But LSU is, of course, great. Hopefully they study hard for the ACT/SAT and can get themselves some money from LSU.

I'm sure your kids will love this. Dads too cheap to send you to LSU now so you will attend BRCC for a few years and then transfer in to LSU. BTW if your Kids are honors in Katy ISD wouldn't they qualify for some sort of scholarships?

I don't, but I think it can indicate the type of money you're looking at.

$7600 out of $28k is the standard out of state waiver

Instate:
Son may go to TCU or UH
Daughter may go to UH or TAMU
TCU would require schollies, the others we could write the checks

I just outlined the LSU fail safe plan, dad is not too cheap, dad is wise. Trying to avoid debt as much as possible

My first tuition check to LSU was $1210 full time student plus $900 for Kirby Smith. My dad paid ~$28k for my entire education

The amount given is usually dependent on student's ACT/SAT & GPA.

The average ACT at A&M is a 27 while the average ACT a LSU is a 26. Very comparable student body.

Daughter likes TAMU
Son and I toured TAMU on Sunday and he doesn't like it. We ate a burger at Harvey Washbangers and there was a table full of freshmen Corp of Cadets guys there and they weren't the best ambassadors for TAMU student life

This is a strange time for parents and kids evaluating colleges, undergrad degrees are worth "less and less" while tuitions are higher and higher.

I took a visit to A&M when I was looking a colleges in high school and I did not like it. I didn't really like the campus. Also it was kinda lame they kept saying or implying we hate "TU", we hate "TU".

I came from Arkansas, my parents feel your pain. Check out SREB, they'll waive a students out of state tuition depending on the program.

For example, if I would have studied Biochemistry, Petroleum Engineering, or Fashion Merchandising my tuition would have been waived. Check it out, I'm not sure what they offer TX students

Good luck

US News has UT-A undergrad in-state tuition at just under $10,000. LSU OOS is $26,500 roughly.

But what I am saying is Texas Unis hide a lot fees. I just looked at UNT and it comes out to about $9600 a year. But they also charge Course Fees that are not included in the Tuition number they give you on their web site. They say Course Fees are not included in the stated price but its difficult to find a $ amount for these course fees. I just texted my nephew who is at UNT and he said he pays an addition $4000 per year in "other" fees. Still lower than LSU OST....and maybe LSU sneaks these type fees in too.

LSU definitely has fees (e.g Academic Excellence, Technology, Building Usage) as does Texas.

Also, as LSU charges the same price no matter your degree, UT's tuition varies depending apon your degree program.

I'm from Texas, now an LSU graduate. Like others have said its the top 10% law that has had the biggest effect.

The other factor to consider is lack of mass-appealing schools after UT. UT is attractive to alot of people for its academics and location in Austin. The second best public university in Texas is A&M, which is better academically than LSU, but it is in College Station and has a 'different' culture.

TTU is further away for kids from the Houston area, and not as good academically.

Texas State seems to have gotten pretty popular with kids because it has a party reputation and is half an hour from Austin. However, it is also not very good academically

UofH is super commutery, my visit there was terrible. Same with UTSA

Personally I was rejected from UT, and got into A&M, but just couldnt do the whole aggy thing. LSU waived my OOS tuition, which honestly, made it an easy choice. Im from a small town, I dont quite remember how i started considering LSU. I dont think anyone had gone there before. I started a trend though 3 people have followed me since.

Also, UT rejects have the choice to enter into the CAP program and go to another school in the System (UTSA, UTA, etc) for a year and can gain automatic admission if they take a certain curriculum and keep a certain GPA. I think when i was looking into it you had to keep a 3.25. So certainly there was no guarantee of getting that and personally I wanted to be somewhere for 4 years.

I dont like the CAP program because of its sole emphasis on high school GPA. We all know cheating runs rampant is high schools. SAT/ACT provides a standardized approach and should be integrated into the system. That isnt sour grapes, as i dont think i would have gotten into UT even if the system didnt exist

I'm a senior and would say there is a lot of Texas people particularly Houston. A descent amount of Atlanta people, and then a few alabama/ Mississippi students.

I can verify. I write the checks to LSU and wrote the checks to Tech.

Daughter is finished and went to Texas Tech. Son is currently at LSU.

He was an honors student at a Katy high school and there are no financial discounts coming from LSU.

Average semester cost at TT was around 6500. First two years at LSU a semester cost has been 19000 for out of state. That includes books and housing and associated fees.

Supa give up TCU. That is close to 30k a semester.

I'd start with $2000 to start every semester. Part from my parents, part from a summer job. That paid room & board, books, fraternity dues, and I had a little left over for spending money. I had a small academic scholly that covered tuition, but tuition was almost nothing anyway.

Most kids in LA are too dumb to go to college, especially LSU (even if it's not that hard to get into as an instate resident.)
