I don't know which it is for me. Being slim and in shape, or being not fat. Either way I guess narcissism.

One needs a motiviation to stay fit:

1. Physical job

2. General health/fitness for life, particularly later in life

3. Vanity

Any of these or a combination are 100% of most people's motivation for exercising.

In my 20s it was pure narcissiism. I was a beast. Now at 40 it's all about being healthier and stronger as I get older so I can enjoy my kids and such as.

Sounds like you have some pretty strong feelings for your friend. Did I just insult your housemate?

I do. I have quite a bit of respect for a United States Navy Admiral, war veteran, college class valedictorian, college athlete, Eagle Scout, pillar of the community, family man extraordinaire, etc. Yes.

I'm prob 60/40 narcissism/fitness.

I also don't think simple enjoyment gets enough credit. I'm beyond lucky that I actually enjoy the act of working out. When I miss a workout I'm pissed.

I see how people who actually hate the process give-up. I luck out and don't have that issue.

In my opinion, the best view is to optimize your health. You can find plenty of information that supports lifting, in conjunction with other activities as the best way to maintain a high level of health/fitness.

Obviously, there is a bit of narcissism attached to improvements in your appearance. IF, however, your appearance is the only measure of success, you will likely fail in maintaining results.

I'm young (22) and single and I got serious into fitness after I stopped playing competitive sports my sophomore year. Now I just do it because I have to get some stress relief. Dont want to get that college beer belly either though.
