Trim/shape it so it doesn't look terrible along the way

My hair around 8" long right now, I started growing it out a little over a year ago.
Initially I wore a hat all the time, but I also started slicking it back using some old school pomades and waxes (Murrays Super Lite ftw!).
Trimming the sides and keeping them faded are a must while you're growing out the top.
I pretty much sport a slicked back undercut these days just like back in the 90's
I get a lot of compliments and my wife HATES it. I know, csb

One possibility is to let the top more freely grow, while keeping the sides and back at least a little on the short side. Then when your hair gets long enough on top you can start letting the sides & back grow out to match. Depending on what your hair looks like, this can help you navigate some of the awkward phases... and while you're in the process of growing it out, you will most likely experience several awkward phases. Each week your hair grows longer, it's almost like a new haircut and your hair isn't well trained to keep a style at that length; so sometimes it'll look better than others.
I haven't had a proper hair cut in at least three months, so mine is getting a bit long and I'm in a similar place... not sure if I'll just tidy it up now at medium length or let it go a little longer. If I let it go longer, I'm probably going to do what I suggested above.

What type of hair do you have? Curly, wavy, straight?

... the pics LouisianaLady posted are along the lines of what I was suggesting in my post above. Once you get the top longer, it's easier to let the sides and back grow out further if you wanna go long all over.

Ugly stage, just takes awhile.
I haven't had a haircut in about 10 years now.
The thing I remember hating about growing it out was the stage where the hair in front were you develop faux bangs and they just rest on your face.
It would wake me up at night having a weirdly itchy forehead because of that shite.
It's the main reason I won't cut my hair off. I know I'll just grow it out again and I don't want to have to go through that shite.
