Late Saturday I was heading in to load the boat after a fruitless couple of hours on Indian Creek when I spotted some schooling activity. Dropped the troll and threw a red rattletrap to see if there were any takers. Sure enough, hooked up quick on a 5 lb striped? bass. Didn't look yellow like a barfish, but not skinny like a striper. Continued throwing until all activity was over and ended up with 6. All were 4-5 lbs with one I estimated at 8 lbs - pulled the scale out and it weighed 11.2#.

I've never done this before, and may not again, but it was like hanging into a redfish and great fun. Bent the hooks up on my trap. Are these true stripers, or some kind of hybrid? Sorry no pics, but am gonna take my son back to try it again when we get a little more sun. I'll get some then.

I have no clue how this could happen. In boat, back at launch, back at home...not one pic?

Lots and they school often, and many times mixed with largemouth,

Believe it or not, hands were slimy and I was by myself.

I haven't heard of any barfish around here getting to 11 lbs. Must've been a hybrid.

ETA: They sure fight like they are 11 lbs though

I caught one a few years ago out of the Bayou Sorrel launch that was probably close to 6 lbs.

Threw my perch pole down last Fall when some came up. Had one on a bass rig when perch pole takes off across boat. Jig could not have been over 2' under water when one came up and got it.

Was fishing on the back side of the small island last year. Had little man slinging a silver rattle trap towards open water. One damn near took his rod out of his hands

These were hitting like that. I'm hoping to get my son on these cause he loves throwing a trap. BTW they were straight between the burnt bridge and the state landing, even with the big island.

There's a 6' 6" med-hvy falcon with a Curado attached to it at the bottom of Concordia from a similar incident. In my instance, we were trolling out into the lake towards some schooling bass. Chart/wht 1/8 oz Wedge (double Colorado) Spinnerbait on said rig was hanging off the front of the boat about 12" ABOVE the water and within 24" of trolling motor shaft. While leaning back on my stool bullshitting with the guy in the back of the boat, a big splash right by my feet occurs, followed by the rod going over the side. Damndest thing. Same trip a trolling motor bracket broke and trolling motor went to bottom of lake. I haven't been back since.

That's usually where we catch them. I would love to have a topo map of ic before the lake was made

First time I witnessed it, but will definitely be checking them again. Water was still cold Sat. (49-51), but hopefully bass will be shallow soon.

isn't the island itself straight between the burt and the landing?

I was going toward the landing and the island (and fish) were on my right, but I guess you're right.

LINK

try the map locator and downloader. it will list all the historical quad maps available, which you can download in PDF form. Not sure if that link will take you there, but if not, try store.usgs.gov/b2c_usgs/usgs/maplocator/ then click down to the location, put a red pin, then click on the pin to see the available maps.

The old maps of Indian Creek area are 15 minutes maps, so very little detail that would be useful to you.
