Step 8 of the 12 step program says:

Yeah that is what the eighth step says, but his friend is on the ninth step:

Made direct amends to such people, wherever possible, except when to do so would injure them or others.

Although it's true these could easily be one step, the founder stretched them out because he felt twelve would be a holy number (as in 12 disciples). That's the kind of hard-core science that backs up this "treatment".

To the OP, if this is helping your friend then listen to his apology and be supportive, but be prepared for his relapse. 90% of the people who buy into this fail at it, and the ones who abandon it have the same success rates as those who stick with it. So support him if he does this program and support him if he doesn't.

The addicts I've met and have had conversations with are the most intelligent people I've ever met

Appreciate it, I was thinking about taking him with my gf and me to the British Virgin Islands. The gf and I can abstain from drinking for the length of a Caribbean vacation.

No problem. I've had two good friends who were functional alcoholics (though just barely) and I've seen how tough it is to just drop something that's such a big part of one's life. I think I flirted with alcoholism a time or two, but I was able to cut back on my own--mainly by mostly giving up hard liquor.

I think she's a truly unique beauty, but apparently I'm in the minority. Nice to meet someone else with good taste.

I was in 7 treatment centers and 2 halfway houses by the time I was 19. Longest stay was right at a year, shortest was 90 days

The less than 10% who did had 99.99% no chance without it. Whatever the % is.... is a small miracle in itself.

Fun to say, but patently false. The rehab-aided recovery vs. spontaneous remission rates don't support your feel good bullshite.

That number has to be weighed against the number of people who enter rehab due to outside pressure from the courts, employers, families. Forced rehab is only good for meeting party girls and drug connections.

I've battled it for years. I'm what you would call a "high functioning alcoholic." Both of my parents are also big drunks but have been able to maintain a tier 1 lifestyle despite their alcohol dependency. I plan on eventually fathering kids who will also abuse alcohol but thrive professionally. Rehab/AA is for poor people with a low IQ and terrible philosophys.

Congratulations, you just added nothing to the conversation and still made the side critical of 12-step programs look bad.

Thanks, but next time you want to contribute, pick the side that I'm not on.

(Unless I'm being sarcastic, then feel free to join in)

You want a serious reply, well here you go.

Yes, I am an alcoholic, and I went into rehab last April. I spent 45 days at a rehab facility in Chaneyville, LA. I have been sober ever since, and am approaching one year of sobriety. If you want to talk to me, email me at codyadavis@yahoo.com and I can give you some more advice on this.

Many that enter those facilities aren't even the real deal....most are not of the hopeless variety. Not saying they don't have problems, but those of the hopeless variety have no other options other than a spiritual solution that the 12 steps can facilitate.
