completely agree. I've never understood the love of the home run, other than it's a quick score. A guy hits a ball over a fence and trots around the bases - not too exciting to me.

I prefer doubles and triples, with the hitter running hard, the fielders moving fast to make a play, and the possibility of a close play at a base or even a play at the plate if an existing base runner is trying to score. Much more action there. And that's what baseball needs.

Everyone loves the triple but you can't say someone clobbering the piss out of one isn't awesome. The trotting around the bases is just what has to be done.

Scivicque's HR easily cleared the H&E Equipment sign in right center field.

Exactly!!! How it's supposed to be, and if these boys start hitting it in the gaps with their speed we might see 10 to 16 runs on good days anyway. Let's face it this isn't the Pros so you gonna have more points in college than Pro ball period. But at the same time when you have a great team, pitching, hitting, fielding and base running it will show. I think LSU is one of if not the best all around baseball teams! That Lange boy is sick, 84 mph curveball... Holy Shi% and the there's Poche Mr Lefty and they can just rotate for game 3 until someone takes that spot for good and it would build experience across the pitching lineup for the next few years. LSU is a damn good team this year and will be very hard to beat!! GT

I'll wait to pass judgement, after a whole season and facing better pitching. But it looks good so far.

Actually, the better pitching should be balanced out by warmer weather so we should continue to see something close to the current ratio of home runs; up about 30% across the board so far. The series in Houston should prove informative; better pitching, warm weather and a short porch for right handed power hitters.

A triple is like a short pass to the RB who then maneuvers through the defense for 70 yards for a TD. A home run is like a 70 yard pass to the WR streaking past the defense.

Sometimes, you just want to see the long ball. It's that "gotcha" moment in baseball. Watching a towering drive disappearing beyond the wall is one of sports simple pleasures.

Don't get me wrong I love the homerun. And the walk off homerun is the most exciting thing in the game.

But triple>homerun in normal circumstances IMO. I don't expect everyone to agree with me either. Homeruns are awesome after all

sure, because it's drama - it's a game winner on one swing of the bat.

Still, I'll take doubles and triples - there's fast movement, both in the field and on the base paths.

From the linked article:
"An upward change was expected here, as the new ball gives hitters more distance on fly balls (more drag effect), but also gives pitchers more movement their fastballs."

That's exactly backwards. The lower stitching provides LESS drag, which increases distance on fly balls but gives pitchers LESS movement on their pitches, again due to less friction with the air.

As for the early results - meh. More home runs (but still very low, only one per every two games), but virtually unchanged batting average and runs per game. Not the big effect that college baseball needs.

I disagree that a big effect is needed. They just need to get it so that when a batter makes good contact on the barrel of the bat, he gets rewarded for it. I don't want to see balls fly out of the park that the batter got underneath too much. And I don't want to see pitchers get away with leaving a breaking ball up in the zone. Somewhere in between is a happy median.

Agreed. I just want to see good fair baseball. I don't want to see either the pitchers or the batters get cheated.

If a pitcher fools a batter I don't want to see a homerun off the handle of the bat but if he leaves a curve over the plate I want to see it get crushed. That's all I've ever wanted out of college baseball.

I personally miss "Gorilla Ball" but understand the need for the changes. I would like to see CPM go after a few more brutes when recruiting. I like the idea of a guy making one swing and changing the whole complexion of the game.

You're partially correct. It's creates less drag, therefore will add distance to fly balls and reduce movement on BREAKING balls.

However, the lower seams will give fastballs more run, especially 2-seamers and cutters.

ETA: It also adds 2-3 MPH onto fastballs, I believe.

Totally agree. If a team gets down by 5 or 6 runs and has any kind of pitching at all, its most likely over.
