He didn't know what to do with it, or how to grab it.

I've fished Chicot Lake probably 5 or 6 times and never caught 1. Saturday evening we caught 5.

When I was a kid, you'd catch as many jack fish as you would bass on caddo.

Black Bayou Hosston has more jackfish in it than anywhere I've ever fished. I caught 5 of them on a crankbait a few weeks, in a tournament up there.

This, but I've only done it once due to the bones.

I'll pass.

Enough delicious stuff swimming around that isn't full of little bitty bones.

It's really a shame because the meat is about as pretty as fish gets.

There are two species of pickerel. Esox niger is a chain pickerel. The OP is an Esox americanus the Redfin or grass pickerel. Esox americanus stay a lot smaller than niger.

They both occur in Louisiana, but the fish in the OP sure looks like a grass pickerel to me.

The angle of the black line under the eye is the best way to tell the species apart. It is nearly absent in the OP fish, but I'd be shocked if it isn't a grass pickerel.

I should add that you don't have redfins in Louisiana. They are further east.

I've always called them jackfish.......they literally eat anything. Usually they are 15 inches or so

Yeah, my family has always called them Jackfish too. I grew up fishing around Alexandria. Some days I would catch 8 Jackfish and 1 Bass. Would always aggravate the crap out of me thinking I have hooked a nice bass and see a Jackfish on the end of the line. Their teeth have really scratched up and ruined many of my top water lures.
