Has all of the Scientology and family weirdness caught up to Will Smith"?

Will Smith didn’t stay in “Focus” last night. His latest film opened to $6.465 million, his lowest opening since 2008. That disaster was the awful, depressing “Seven Pounds.” Since then he’s been in “Men in Black 3? and “After Earth.” The latter opened to $9.8 million and and sank quickly, ending up with a domestic box office of $60.5 million.

It’s unclear whether “Focus” will have better legs. Right now predictions are a weekend finish of $19 million if lucky. But it’s clear that the affable Smith, who radiates charm and is certainly a welcome presence on movie screens, has to re think what’s going on here.

Once he was the go-to star for July 4th weekend. That isn’t the case anymore. It’s odd that he passed on the sequel to “Independence Day,” one movie that fans would clamor to see him in. Perhaps his attitude toward aliens has changed since then.

Seems like he needs to reconsider some things and reinvent himself somehow. Sort of reminds me of Tom Cruise after the whole Oprah jumping on the couch incident. It took him doing some things like his role in Tropic Thunder to make people move past it.

Why would anyone give a shite if he's a scientologist?

He just needs to pick better movie roles. I'm a huge Will Smith fan and I have little interest in seeing Focus

Do you currently live in 2015 in the USA?

People are sensitive about every little GD thing even if they shouldn't be.

He needs to pick better roles. He should have signed up for Independence Day 2. He's gonna have a big role Suicide Squad which should make bank.

I personally do not give a shite what another person believes in or does. But I have heard several people say they don't like Tom Cruise for this very reason.

Yeah, Seven Pounds was good stuff. He just needs to start picking better roles again, I have always been a Smith fan but the only thing about Focus that made me want to see it is seeing Margot Robbie for 90 minutes. She is hot fire.

write something like that for Will Smith and I'll watch it. I think the comparison between Smith and Cruise is a fair one. Both guys seemed to be taking themselves too seriously. Do something to make us laugh, Will.

I would probably go see a Fresh Prince Movie. It would probably be terrible, but I would see it.

One criticism of Cruise around the time of the Oprah incident is that he had replaced his former handlers with Scientologists... who promptly steered his career off a cliff. It took a good amount of work to get back in the good graces of the movie going public after that.

Smith might be caught in the same bind of following bad advice but with the additional problem of him moving Heaven and Hell trying to jump start his children's careers. Both of whom, it should be noted, seemingly could care less about being stars.

He's in his slump that many actors go through. He needs to find a way to shake it off. Scientology doesn't help either.

Have you seen some of the interviews he did with his son to promote After Earth? Some of it could be some of the awkward stuff you've seen.

I can't remember what the particular interview was but there was a part that went something like.

Jayden: What is 'nothing'?
Will: Wow. What is 'nothing'? That's deep.

And that debate continued on for about a minute. They had a couple of interviews that went in some weird direction.

I'm not sure if it's his beliefs or not, but a lot of the traits that made him likeable and relatable seemed to have disappeared.

He used come off as a guy that enjoyed life. He seemed like just a typical guy, who happened to be talented. His talent and success didn't seem to change who he was a person.

Now, he seems less enjoyable. Although I'm not sure whether he is arrogant but that interview with his kids may have been the most arrogant and pretentious nonsense I've ever read.

I know that children's views may diverge from their parents', even when the parents are objectively good parents. That being said, it was so out of touch, and not out of touch in the typical immature adolescent ways, that it's hard not to think that Will (and Jada) may be quite out of touch too.

I hope I'm wrong though.

If you are saying his movies aren't selling a lot of tickets because he is a Scientologist I think you are way wrong. If he put out a great movie that people were interested in then it would be a box office hit, regardless of his weird religion.

I both worked on and saw Focus. Do not recommend. The story is all over the fricking place and needed better editing.

He has gone a bit of the deep end with his family and his oddball quotes but I doubt that keeps anyone from the theater.

He just hasn't been in any good films for a long time.
