I agree with this. Adults should be allowed to make their own choices.

AUGUSTA, Maine — It's an effort that even the bill's sponsor acknowledges is poor timing.

Just two days after a 75-vehicle pileup injured at least 17 people in the state, lawmakers in Maine are considering legislation that would allow adults to opt out of wearing seat belts.

I agree with it too but I would go as far as saying that they should raise the punishment for kids not being buckled up.

Seat belts should be required for drivers. During a violent collision, a driver can often be displaced from their seat if no restraints are worn. A seatbelt may help a driver keep control of the vehicle in such an instance.

Just my 2 cents

While I am all for personal freedoms, there is literally no benefit of not wearing a seatbelt.

There is no rational argument for why a person shouldn't wear a seatbelt. The mandate should stand.

Anything, or anyone, not properly secure in the cabin can become a projectile at high speed collisions. Couple that with people not being medically insured/underinsured or having minimum coverage on their automobiles, and you're asking for a lot of trouble.

If the state doesn't require motorcycle to wear helmets then why enforcement of seat belts.

Every state can provide statistics re the number of auto passengers/drivers killed when they were thrown from the vehicle and/or thrown head first through the windshield because they were not wearing seat belts. Look at the stats for your state & tell me your "freedom" is more important. And let this become law in your state & watch as your auto insurance rates sky rocket in response.

As long as Ins. companies can opt out of paying medical benefits for people who weren't wearing them. And make kids buckle up. Don't let children suffer for their parents' stupidity.

How would an insurance company determine who does and doesn't wear a seatbelt?

Easy, if the police report says you were injured because you didn't wear a seatbelt, they don't have to pay for your medical care.

Unless they're dead, in which case paying medical benefits would not really matter to the driver anymore, any sane person would argue they were wearing it and unbuckled themselves after the accident.

Then the state legislature can pay for the bill because there will not be major medical liability insurance that will cover these people. If the person cant afford to pay the medical out of pocket then the state legislature picks up the bill.

The state legislature picks up the tab for making this kind of irresponsible law

So could we piggyback an "assisted suicide" amendment to this bill. Would love to drive through Maine without wearing a seat belt on my way to have a doctor kill me! :^)

Kind of tough arguement to make when it's obvious you went through the windshield
