I agree with this. Adults should be allowed to make their own choices.

AUGUSTA, Maine — It's an effort that even the bill's sponsor acknowledges is poor timing.

Just two days after a 75-vehicle pileup injured at least 17 people in the state, lawmakers in Maine are considering legislation that would allow adults to opt out of wearing seat belts.

As long as Ins. companies can opt out of paying medical benefits for people who weren't wearing them. And make kids buckle up. Don't let children suffer for their parents' stupidity.

If the parents don't wear seat belts then the kids won't either.

I like the sentiment, but that would just mean they run up a big hospital bill they can't pay so it's not like the responsible people save anything.

Most fatalities occur on 2 lane rural roadways. Mostly due to running off the road. 75% of them are not belted. As long as this remains the case and the families sue the state for some sort of neglect, seat belts should be required. Otherwise all the tax payers are paying for other peoples choices not to wear seat belt.

If you're dumb enough to not wear a seat belt then natural selection will take care of itself.

I think trucks should be eliminated from the seat belt law. Georgia was the last state forced into compliance a few years ago. AARP lobbied the piss out of the legislator and they finally made it law.

I agree with requiring them for kids, but I'm not sure about the insurance thing. What about people who enjoy outdoor sports and activities? Are you going to allow insurance companies to refuse to pay for treatment of people who are injured skiing, surfing, scuba diving, boating, wake boarding, etc.?

I wouldn't say any of those activities are extremely dangerous, but they certainly increase your risk of injury. I believe some of the more extreme sports (base jumping, mountain climbing, etc.) may affect the terms of your life insurance, but I'm not aware of health insurance refusing to pay for medical treatment even in those circumstances.

ETA-I think it's pretty dumb to not wear a seatbelt.

At one time my ins. policy excluded auto racing, skydiving, and several other high risk activities. I haven't looked at the policy in a while so it may have changed, but that used to be the case.

I'm all for allowing individual freedoms so I applaud this potential legislation.

Like I said, I was aware of the restrictions when it comes to life insurance, but I hadn't heard of a health insurance provider refusing to pay for medical treatment because the patient had been engaging in a dangerous activity. You learn something new every day.

Don't forget the money (millions?) in federal funds that would be lost if Maine axed its seat-belt law.

You're right, but the law will never go away because it gives cops one more excuse to stop you and look in your car/try to get you on something bigger

So long as a tortfeasor does not have to pay for damages that would have been prevented I'd the person had worn one, fine with me.

It's stupid to drive without your seatbelts but adults make stupid decisions.
