re: Former LSU player Jerry "Ice" Reynolds

What made Jerry a very effective player, was his reach and speed. He was around 6-8/9 but the arm reach of a 7 footer.
He is still in the LSU top ALL Time Steal leaders, with 194 steals in 90 games for a 2.1 average (and yes I am the person that got LSU to place the All time steal, block, an the all time assist list in the basketball media guide, that research started when I was looking up Pete's assist total).
The North Carolina game were LSU held NC to 47 points is on Dec 4 1982:
PF Sam Perkins 6-9
C Bard Daugherty 6-11
SF Matt Doherty 6-8
OG Michael Jordan 6-6
PG Jim Braddock 6-2
The game was played in Newark New Jersey. One of the main reasons why the game is played in NJ is because Smith was recruiting Kenny Smith out of New York City.
But Brown never could coach, but his coaching held a who's who of McDonald All Americans to 47 total points and a record 9 if I remember correct at half time.
Smith also knows about John Williams out in Cal and has already recruited a player from his High School trying to get Williams.
Off hand guess of LSU's starting five:
PG Johnny Jones 6-2
OG John Tudor 6-6
SF Howard Carter 6-5
C Leonard Mitchell 6-7
PF Jerry Reynolds 6-8
Key back ups
Steffond Johnson 6-8 c/pf
Don Redden 6-6 sf/og
Tyrone Black 6-8
This LSU team lacked height and depth.

JR was a big negative. He had some ability - enough to barely hang on in the NBA - and maybe under a good coach he'd have been an asset, but his jump shot was streaky at best, and he jacked it up too often. He was all show and very little production.

Your analasys off Reynolds is spot-on. He had the size and athleticism, but his game was not very good.

That was the game that John Tudor wrecked Kenny Smith, right?
Tudor turned into a good player. I can't remember in verbatim what Dale Brown said exactly, but it was something to the effect that he told Tudor to never shoot the ball his 1st couple of years and just play defense. Daddy Dale had no confidence in his shooting skills.

ALL LIST at LSU:
Points scored:
#37 1069 11.9
Assist:
#27 211 2.3
Rebounds:
#23 613 6.8
When he leaves LSU after his Jr. year, his all time totals are much higher up the list.
NBA
Games played 443
Minutes played a game 18.9
Points per game 9.1
Assist per game 2.0
Steals per game 1.1
9.1 per game puts him in the top 10 LSU all time in the NBA.

Kenny Smith gets hurt in the next LSU vs North Carolina game, he is a Sr. in High School when LSU holds them to 47.
I have Kenny's autograph on a thank you card for wishing him to get well soon, from that injury.

Not quite but close... Ice Reynolds was not a streaky jump shooter because that would mean that he would have to be hot from the outside and I don't ever remember him shooting much from outside 15 feet. I remember the hype surrounding his commitment and the anticipation leading up to playing for LSU. Its funny because he came up with a nickname for his jump shot in high school... he called it the "Monster J"! Am I the only one that remembers that??? All in all, I saw him as a poor mans Kenny "Sky" Walker. Nice player but kind of a let down once I got to see him play a lot.
That NC loss sucked. Esp after holding them to 9 in the first half.

Man, I loved going to BB games in the 80s. My FR year was 83-84 when Redden came in. I don't remember who came in what years. I do remember that year Brown going really hard after Benoit Benjamin (7'0") who played a while in the NBA with the Warriors but we lost out to Creighton of all schools. The next year we sign Tom Curry (6'9") who was really highly regarded the same year with Nikita Wilson (6'8"). However, something happened with Curry and he never played for us. Add Tito Horford (7'0") and Arvidas Sabonis (7'2") and we just missed on a ton of guys. Finally, we bring in Stanley Roberts (7'0") but we gets declared academically ineligible (along with Boudreaux and Williamson) his FR year and you understand why folks were so sky-high in 89-90 when we had Jackson, Roberts and O'Neal all on the same team. Unfortunately, only for 1 year. I still love that whole time between Macklin/Scales to Jackson/O'Neal. It took me from about 7th grade all the way through law school.

I remember this. One afternoon we snuck down to the court under the Assembly Center to play ball and Ice was in there shooting. He was burying everything from long range, but when he got into games his jump shot all but disappeared.

I loved Hosea Vargas ,he could palm the ball with one hand take one Huge step from the top of the circle and windmill that ball through the hoop it was tremendous , defenders scattered like a grenade had been exploded when he did this !

Things haven't change much instead of Sabin it was McKnight who had the refs in His back pocket with ESPN's and ncaa's blessings!

This is a fine point, but just to clarify; it is Jerry "Ice" Reynolds, not Jerry "Iceman" Reynolds.

2 or 3 inches taller than TQ with an outrageous wingspan. Lead the SEC in steals a couple of times and played for many years in the NBA. TQ has the kind of upside and work-ethic to make it big someday as well. Love his attitude and hustle.

Could you imagine the '86 team if everything had worked out:
F Ice Reynolds 6'8"
F Nikita Wilson 6'8"
F John Williams 6'7"
G Don Redden 6'6"
G Derrick Taylor 6'0"
with off the bench:
Bernard Woodside 6'6"
Anthony Wilson 6'4"
Oliver Brown 6'6"
Jose Vargas 6'9"
Dennis Brown 6'3"
Ricky Blanton 6'7"
Zoran 7'0"
and of course Neboisha and Ocie Conley

Man answers ,you forgot to thank daddy dale! The best college coach ever no matter what you think of his x's and o's !

Well I specifically thank Dale Brown now. I loved his optimism. He was at LSU from when I was 7 to when I was 32. He almost seemed like a member of the family. I know he wasn't the best Xs and Os coach but he was special and I'm glad we had him. Having Jones as coach gives the program that family feeling again.

Ice had the longest arms for a player of his height. Excellent ball handler and really good on defense. Just couldn't shoot the rock very well...

I remember Brown tried Reynolds out at PG and him being decent but not great. It's a shame that didn't work out well in '85 as we could have had Wilson (6'8") and Williams (6'8") at PFs, Redden (6'6")at SF and Reynolds (6'8") at PG. Can't remember who played SG. As it was we played Williams at SF while he was more dominant down low.

Wilson would not have started. Wilson had been a center in high school and it took a while to get him used to playing pf.
Kenny Walker's NBA stats are very close to Jerry's, Walker 7 years vs Jerry's 8.
Jerry had a better scoring avg, ast avg.
Walker better rebounding avg.
